Dorothy Ann Nuttall
Dorothy Ann Nuttall, Dottie, 95, long-term resident of 3948 NE 169th St. North Miami Beach, Florida passed away at her son and daughter-in-law’s home in Woodbine, Georgia, surrounded by her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren on August 19th, 2022.
Known for her cheerful disposition and great sense of humor she will be intensely missed and remembered. Passionate in her beliefs in social justice, the protection of life and the environment she was a regular donor to a broad range of social and environmental initiatives from Medicines du Monde to the Sierra Club to the Humane Society. A fearless world traveler in her later years, she visited numerous countries in Europe and North Africa.
A celebration of her life, as she’d requested, to the background of Mozart, will be held by her family later this year at a location still to be determined in Miami, Florida.
Born Dorothy Ann Rice on March 10, 1927 to father Statton L. Rice and mother Dorothy Whitaker Rice in Harrisburg, PA, Dottie spent most of her youth in Delmar, New York where she graduated from Bethlehem Central High in 1945. She went on to earn an Associates’ Degree from Lasalle Junior College in Boston, MA in 1947, and first a Bachelor of Arts and then Masters’ of Education at Wayne State University in Detroit, MI in 1978.
Married to Garth L. Nuttall in Boston in 1952, Dottie, Garth and her growing family lived for a time in, Indiana and then Chicago Heights, Ill. before buying a home at 23660 Beacon Drive in Farmington, Mi. Dottie and Garth had three children: James Statton Nuttall; Garth L. Nuttall; and Karen Nuttall.
Pursuing her interest in children’s education, Dottie worked progressively as a substitute teacher in the Detroit school system, then preschool teacher and, after moving to the Boston area in 1982 where she eventually bought a home on 215 Winter ST. in Weymouth, MA. worked first as a preschool teacher then preschool Administrator before moving on to become an Administrative Assistant at Boston Hospital in 1985, where she worked until her retirement in 1999.
In late 1999 Dottie moved to the Miami area where she eventually bought her home in North Miami Beach where she loved to sit on her porches and watch the boats passing on the Intracoastal waterway. In addition to her three children (James in Miami, FL, Garth in Woodbine, GA, and Karen in Ann Arbor, MI), Dottie is survived by her brother Statton L. Rice Jr. of Wolfeboro, NH , her sister, Peggy Pritchett of Philadelphia, PA., five grandchildren: Brianna May; Emily Rhyse Sachin; Henry Garth Love; Alex Nuttall; Garth Nuttall III; and eight great-grandchildren: Cameron May; Addison May; Anusha Ann Sachin; Kaia Nuttall; Sansita Marie Sachin; Jacob Henry Love; Thea Nuttall; and Kainoa Nuttall.
