How you can help
Our beloved grandmother, Dorothy Ellen Martin spent her whole life sacrificing everything in life to ensure the people she loved were taken care of and had everything they needed. She raised her two sons alone than stepped up to be the mother of her two granddaughters my sister and myself, when our mother could not be there. She work 50+hour weeks to come home clean, make dinner, put us to bed, go to work on graveyard to come home and get us up and ready for school. Then to do it all over again.
In 2003 Dorothy was diagnosed with a series of mini-strokes with early onset Alzheimer's. She was forced to stop working and be placed on disability to become a homemaker for my sister and I, while her son Billy our dad drove truck. Our family has endured a lot of hardships over the years but she was always the loving kind, level-headed glue that kept our family together. She spent her whole life devoting everything she could to anyone, trying to make the world a better place.
On December 20th 2019 our grandmother was rushed to the hospital extremely ill! We were informed that she was in end-stage COPD. She had also been diagnosed with severe pneumonia. We were told she wouldn't make it a week. On December 24th her sister Darla came to see her in the hospital telling her that she wasn't allowed to pass. Since Darla was her older sister and it was her duty to go first. Little did we know, that this would be the last time she would see her, as her sister Darla passed away Christmas morning 2019. After that Grandma spent two days in ICU. We were all so scared for her life, but thankfully she was able to pull through and come home on January 2nd.
The first few days were rough as being in the hospital 13 days she wasn't moving much, but being the the strongest person I have ever known, she was back on her feet walking around a week later. She started showing signs that her Alzheimer's was progressing. We believe that her illness in December had caused her Alzheimer's to kick in full force. She returned to the hospital in April, when we learned she had congestive heart failure. Then in August we learned she was in end stages of Alzheimer's, dementia. Each time she came home she was in a little worse shape, more pain and had more difficulty doing things on her own. She would get up in the middle of the night and try to walk around the house and would end up falling several times.
On Wednesday September 30th 2020 my sister and dad were assisting my grandmother to the restroom when she started crying in pain and requested an ambulance. The emergency room nurse informed us she had a severe UTI which was hurting her kidneys. She had an infection in a blister on her leg due to her congestive heart failure and that she needed to receive two units of blood, as her blood count was extremely low. The nurse believe she could pass in the night luckily she survived. She was showing improvement. and they were releasing her even though we did not think she was in the best condition to come home, because of how sick she was the night before. 1 p.m. on September 31st they released her anyways against our wishes. She was very lethargic. She could not speak, could barely open her eyes. We got her in the car and started heading out of the parking lot before Grandma started crying and yelled out "OW!" I reached up grabbing her hand and I asked her ow what grandma? what hurts? she screamed out "HELP!" I ask again what was wrong as she yelled out "STOP!" . My sister pulled into the next parking lot where I jumped up and opened Grandma's door I asked her what was wrong? what hurt? several times. With her unable to answer, and being so lethargic we thought it be best to take her back and pleaded with the hospital to readmit her. We were informed she would need to go through the ER. Her son Billy was allowed to stay with her until she was admitted, and inform me that I may be able to visit with her if I spoke with the nurses that evening. That evening I had called to see if I would be able to visit. I was informed the only exception to no visitors was it the patient was actively dying and the call had already been made to the director of the hospital to approve my visit. My heart sank.
When I arrived in her hospital room, she was on no monitors, no machines, all they were giving her was saline and morphine. I asked if they knew what was wrong with her and the nurse stated adult failure to thrive due to her losing battle with Alzheimer's, Dementia, COPD, and congestive heart failure. I was told she was giving up, and they were not going to do anything to help her. We arranged to have her brought home with family on Saturday October 03, 2020.
Unfortunately she passed away on Monday October 05, 2020 at 4:40 pm
As everyone is well aware, 2020 has been a hard year for everyone, for some, more so than others, but hard nonetheless.
Our dear sweet Grandmother, My hero's final wishes were to be cremated, and we are trying everything in our power to help fulfill this wish for her. Any donation helps. If you are unable to donate, please share! We are greatly appreciative of any and all help during this difficult time.
Thank you so much for taking the time to read this. Please pass it along.
