Dorothy's obituary

On June 11, 2020, Dorothy Mae Kergan (Dottie) passed away due to complications following a fall. A woman of faith, Dottie believed strongly in the divine and is now at peace in heaven. She lived for her beloved husband Frederick Edward Kergan, Jr., who served as her caregiver as well. Born on July 21, 1929 in Waycross, GA, she was the fourth child of mother Myrtis Juanita Moore and George Weston Aycock. Her father died before Dottie was born, and her mother remarried to a man who became an excellent father to Dottie and her siblings. Dottie had fond memories of growing up and enjoyed helping out in her parents’ grocery store and pharmacy. Her siblings Grace, George Wheaton, and Juanita (Jo) preceded her in death.

At 17, Dottie attended a women’s college before transferring to a teacher’s college and was active on campus, including playing a lead role in The Glass Menagerie. After graduating, she taught elementary school, before heading to Long Beach, CA, where she lived with her sister while her husband served in the Navy overseas. She continued teaching for 13 years, including one memorable year teaching in Puerto Rico. While living in Long Beach, she met her future husband Fred at a church singles event.

They married on November 24, 1962 and enjoyed over 57 years together. Dottie and Fred were blessed with two children, Kergan Edwards-Stout and Laurel Provenzano. Dottie enjoyed her involvement with her children and their activities such as a soccer, piano recitals, and Christian family camps. A travel trailer took them camping, fishing, and water skiing, providing lots of family fun. Dottie and Laurel were active in National Charity League for many years, and Dottie also taught Sunday school and Bible study classes.

Following her children’s departure to college, Dottie re-entered teaching and became a teacher of English as a second language at the Long Beach School for Adults, as well as pursuing an interest in Marriage and Family Counseling by taking courses at Chapman College.

Dottie and Fred later retired to Palm Desert, where they enjoyed making new friends at the Lakes Country Club. They were often visited by their children and grandchildren, who enjoyed the elaborate holiday brunches served at the clubhouse.
After many happy years in the desert, Dottie and Fred moved to Orange, CA, to be closer to their grandchildren, who became a focal point of their lives. Dottie looked forward to attending all of their school and sport activities and took pride in her grandkids’ development. Dottie became a member of Trinity United Presbyterian church and continued her involvement in spiritual pursuits. She attended Bible study in her community, Rocking Horse Ridge, until her declining health prevented her from doing so.

In addition to her husband Fred, Dottie is survived by her children, Kergan and his husband Russ Noe, and Laurel and her husband Michael Provenzano, and her grandchildren, Mason and Marcus Edwards, and Nick, Jake and Jack Provenzano. While Dottie is greatly missed, her family takes comfort in knowing that she is finally home in the arms of her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
