Dorothy's obituary

Dorothy “Dottie” Haimé was always the life of the party and had the special gift of touching everyone around her with her infectious light and energy. She was born on July 10, 1938 in McKeesport, PA, and soon after, her family moved to New York City where Dottie spent many years living and working in Harlem, NY, which she adored. Nothing made her happier than to be part of the vibrant and historical wonderland of her youth and where she started her adult life with her sister Marzella in their Lenox Terrace apartment.

After graduating from Seward Park High School, Dottie married Harold Haime and had daughter Deatra Maria, and son Ross Hendricks. When they started school, she returned to college and earned a bachelor’s degree from Lehman College, an MBA from Baruch College, and a master’s degree in education from Bank Street College of Education. After working in human resources, Dottie made the transition to education where she began as a middle school teacher and eventually became assistant principal of The Frederick Douglas Academy, where she dedicated herself to educating the children of Harlem. Using her business savvy, she brought incredible resources into the school through partnerships she established with the Gap Inc., the Estée Lauder Companies, and Sumitomo Mitsui Trust Bank, who provided internships for the students, donated a variety of goods and services, and sponsored trips to Japan and France.

When she wasn’t working on behalf of students, Dottie indulged in many hobbies that included art, antiques, and traveling. She loved going to museums, taking art classes, and collecting fine art. She was also fortunate enough to travel the world and had amazing adventures in Europe, South Africa, the Caribbean, and South America.

After retiring, she spent most of her time doting on her grandchild whom she truly adored. She picked them up from school, went to their games and concerts, took them shopping, and was their confidant when they needed her wisdom and guidance. She was also a docent at the Schomburg Library in Harlem and her favorite pastimes were attending flea markets and tag sales and playing bridge.

Dottie passed away on March 25, 2020, at home in the company of her son and daughter. Loved by many, she was predeceased by brothers Ulysses Fant, Ernest Fant, and James Fant, and sister Verneta Jones, and is survived by son Ross Haime and wife Ellen, daughter Deatra Haime Anderson and husband William, grandchildren Lena Haime, Dylan Haime, and Grace Anderson, sister Marzella Dawkins, nieces Natalie Fant, Pamela Jones Harbour, Candace Braumuller, and nephews Joseph Jones, Jr. , Walter Dawkins, Corey Dawkins, and Stephen Fant, and countless family and friends.
