Dorothy's obituary
Dorothy (Dottie) Lee Draver, age 69, passed away peacefully July 15th, 2023, due to complications from cancer. She was born August 23rd, 1953, in Shirley, Massachusetts to Eugene and Dorothy Wilkerson.
When Dorothy’s children were young, the phrase “stay-at-home-mom” did not exist. It was usual for women to stay home with the children while their husbands worked. Even by the standards of the era, Dottie was an exceptional wife and mother. She cared deeply for her family and neighbors. She did this not out of obligation, but because of who she was. She was always the first to offer help. She regularly brought meals to the home of sick neighbors. She always ensured that every child who crossed her threshold was safe, healthy, and happy.
Her life was a living example of one of her favorite Bible verse, Ephesians 4:32 — “And be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving one another, just as God also forgave you in Christ.”
Dorothy loved to sew, crochet, and cross-stitch little embroidered sayings constantly. Her hands were rarely still. She also shared her love of cooking, grilling and tasty food with anybody who walked in the door. Her grandchildren called her Mammie, and comfort food was Mammie's favorite to prepare for others including dishes like meatloaf, chicken pie, pot roast, and barbeque ribs.
Dorothy is survived by her daughters, Donna Draver Toombs and Diane Draver, her brothers Allen Wilkerson and Andy Wilkerson, her half-brother Steve Myers, her grandsons Eric Reid and Aaron Toombs and his wife, Kelsey Toombs. She is also loved and remembered by her great grandchildren Nolan Reid, McKensey Reid, Marie Toombs, and Todd Toombs. Dorothy was preceded in death by her mother Dorothy Wilkerson, her father Eugene Wilkerson, her sister Cindy Eller, her half-brother Michael Myers, and her grandchild Elon Bauer.
Please join us celebrating her life Thursday July 20th at Belmont Baptist Church, 3032 Bellemont Mount Hermon Rd., Burlington, NC 27215. Public visitation starts at 1pm, followed by the funeral service at 2pm. There will be a reception in the Fellowship Hall following the service. Flowers can be sent to Belmont Baptist Church in Dorothy’s honor.
