Personal note from Stephen, Pauline & Donovan Peters

Grandma Dorothy was an inspiration to all of us from the moment we met her. She was a Godly woman who wasn't afraid to stand up for what's right and was quick to tell you otherwise. She took care of her own children, grand children and great grand children selflessly and without thought of herself. She was the kind of person who would give of herself each and every day long into her 90s. She was a student of life and never ceased to try and learn new things no matter what life told her was the normal age to start learning an instrument, building something in her backyard, or caring for others. She never let age define her and that is one of the most valuable things our elders can teach us. I am reminded of a particularly vivid event that I'd like to share. When I was 6 or 7 we were at her pool in Florida and I was in a chair poolside refusing to swim. She told me it would be fine and that I was already way past the time one needs to learn to swim. I cried, screamed and refused what she was telling me. She then picked up the chair and threw me in the water. I was fine and learned to swim (maybe not that day but very soon afterward). She was a great lady with a big heart for her family.

We love you, miss you, and look forward to seeing you again in heaven Grandma!

Love,

Stephen, Pauline & Donovan Peters (grandson, granddaughter & great grandson)

Dorothy’s father, John Awgul, came to New York from Vilnius, Lithuania (then Wilma, Germany) in 1914 at age 14. They arrived on the ship Czar in steerage class. The …
