Doris's obituary
Doris T. Seymore (nee Snell) 76 of Lake Barrington, IL, formerly of Chicago, IL passed away unexpectedly on February 4, 2023.
Doris was born on November 15, 1946, in Chicago, IL to Emmett and Ernestine Snell. She grew up in Chicago and attended Holy Cross Elementary School. After graduating in 1960, she attended Loretto Academy High School on 65th street graduating in 1964. Doris continued her education at Central State University in Wilberforce, OH and got a Bachelor’s Degree of Science in Education in 1968.
She took classes and got certifications in Inner City Studies, Sociology, and Rehabilitation Administration from DePaul and Northeastern University.
In 1968 Doris became a teacher with the Chicago Board of Education and taught grades kindergarten through third grade for 30 years. Doris taught and touched the lives of many children.
Doris was a woman of many achievements, some include designing the cover of the book The Delinquent Girl (Clyde Vedder and Dora Somerville)and writing the preface poem under her maiden name Doris Snell.
She later became a member of Delta Sigma Theta, a sorority where her mother Ernestine and niece Dena were proud active members. She had many hobbies and enjoyed working with any form of art, traveling, reading, and designing children's clothing. Most importantly, she loved to organize family activities. Doris was committed to working with groups of people to further social and personal development. She will be truly missed by all who knew her.
She is preceded in death by her parents Ernestine and Emmett Snell and her sister Athleese E. (John) Marshall and her Niece Dena (Kirk) Turner.
Doris is survived by her loving daughter Jessica E. (Adrian A.) Washington; cherished grandchildren Olivia E. Washington, Sophia T. Washington, and Adrian J. Washington; former husband Jesse L. Seymore; nephew John (Holly) Marshall; and her dear friends Delores Gray (nee Terry), Gelinda Condos and Cynthia Searcy. Cynthia’s favorite memory was going with Doris to the Sadie Bruce Dance School when she was 7 and dancing at the opera house and Regal Theatre.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made Doris’s favorite organization, Hamilton Wings (Doris’ tribute page: https://www.hamiltonwings.org… ). Hamilton Wings’ programs target diverse, economically and/or socially disadvantaged children aged 6-17 who have limited access to arts and enrichment programs at school and at home. Hamilton Wings offers youth and their families opportunities for meaningful, creative, non-traditional learning, and promotes participation by children and families in the area’s rich cultural resources.
