Dorene's obituary
It is with profound sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Dorene Winifred Batts, who departed this life on June 15, 2025, at McCoy Nursing Memorial Home in Bishopville, SC. Dorene was 77 years old, born in Louisville, KY, to the late Charles W. Gray Sr. and Cecelia E. Cox Gray.
Dorene was an extraordinary woman whose radiant presence blessed countless lives. Her gentle spirit and humble nature touched everyone she met, creating ripples of love and kindness that will continue to resonate far beyond her physical presence. As a devoted sister, nurturing mother, and adoring grandmother, Dorene wove herself into the very fabric of her family's hearts, leaving an indelible mark of warmth and affection. .
A Life Woven with Love and Grace
Dorene was raised in Louisville, KY alongside nine siblings. Her early years were spent singing with four of her sisters in a group known as “The Gray Sisters”. She sung on the WHAS Crusade For Children, Hi Verity, USO Show, WLOU Home Show, and at Louisville Orchestra events. Dorene and her sisters also made a record called “Small Town Gossip” with “Cosmo & The Counts” (1962). In her moments of solitude, she found joy and tranquility in sewing, tackling crossword puzzles, and immersing herself in the pages of a good book.In her youth, Dorene attended Augustine Catholic Church and School and Immaculate Heart of Mary Church and School, graduating from Central High School in Louisville, KY. Dorene shared her beautiful voice with the world as a vocalist alongside her sisters in the beloved musical group, The Gray Sisters. In her moments of solitude, she found joy and tranquility in sewing, tackling crossword puzzles, and immersing herself in the pages of a good book.
Finding Peace in Eternal Rest
Though her earthly journey has ended, bringing a gentle relief from life's trials and tribulations, we find solace in knowing that Dorene now walks among angels. In heaven's embrace, she has found peace and freedom from pain, her spirit soaring higher than ever before. She was preceded in death by her parents, Charles and Cecilia Gray; brothers, Glen S. Gray, Charles W. Gray Jr., and John L. Gray; sisters, Mary M. Polk and Rose M. Gray; grandparents, Edgar G. Cox and Mary Agnes Simms Cox.
Cherished Family
Dorene leaves behind her beloved son, Cornelius and his wife Nicola, and her devoted daughter, Bettina. She is also survived by her loving siblings: Charlene C. Smith, Arlene E. McClure, Barbara A. Carroll Williams, and Cecelia M. Mayfield. She will be deeply missed by her grandchildren: Tobias, Dominic, Tanisha, Ariana, Christopher, Itica, Karima, and Engracia Ballard. Dorene was preceded in death by her grandson, Nigel. She also leaves behind a host of cherished nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts, and stepchildren, all of whom were touched by her boundless love.
