Donna's obituary
Donna P Finney
Feb 28, 1938 - March 24, 2024
Donna, 86, of Largo, FL passed away in the early morning hours on Sunday, March 24, 2024 peacefully in her sleep, after a nearly 8-year battle with vascular dementia. Born in Springfield Illinois, Donna was the first of three children born to Pirdie and Ethel (Mowry) Boner. She was raised in the rural community of Pleasant Plains Illinois, and graduated from Pleasant Plains High School in 1956. After studying at Land of Lincoln Community College for three years, she worked as a bookkeeper throughout her work career.
She and husband Bob Dour welcomed her only child, daughter Tish Ann (Dour) Wold in 1965. Donna lived in St Louis County for the next 17 years, raising her family until Bob’s passing in Oct 1982. Donna remained in St Louis County until Aug 1984 when she married David B. Finney, Jr and joined him in Virginia IL. She and David enjoyed retired life together, traveling and being involved in many community charities. During this time, David undertook the challenge of hiking the Appalachian Trail. Donna accompanied him on many of the trips he took to hike, and while he hiked, she enjoyed numerous civil war museums and historic sites, and “supporting the local economy.”
Following David’s passing in 2006, and a couple of surgeries, Donna made the decision to move to Florida to be near her daughter Tish and granddaughter Samantha in 2013. Donna enjoyed her later retirement years as a resident of Royal, then Regal Palms and as a member of Prince of Peace Lutheran Church.
Donna was an active member of her church wherever she lived. In addition to her faith, her two true passions throughout her lifetime were music and her family. Up until the week prior to her death, she could be heard singing along with any and all songs, but especially traditional church hymns. And sing she did!! Donna knew all the words, for ALL of the stanzas of the church hymns.
Throughout her lifetime, she was devoted to her family. She and granddaughter Samantha enjoyed a special bond - having annual vacation time together thru Samantha’s high school years. Donna was thrilled when Samantha asked her to be her matron of honor at her wedding! And, of late, she cherished visits from great granddaughter Lily. Her face lit up when Lily came to see her. She may not have understood how she was related, but she loved those visits.
She is preceded in death by two husbands, Bob Dour (1982) and David B Finney, Jr (2006), parents, and two younger siblings. She is survived by her daughter Tish (Dour) Wold (and longtime boyfriend, Tracy Kuhns), of Clearwater FL, granddaughter Samantha Wold (husband Andres Villarroel), of St Petersburg FL and great granddaughter Liliana Villarroel, as well as step-daughters, nieces, nephews, and cousins.
A service will be held at a later date, when Donna’s ashes will be buried next to the graves of her two husbands in Virginia, Illinois.
Since supporting local charities was important to Donna, in lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the local food bank in your area.
