Donna Bernadine Kapiolani Yuk Lan DeMello, affectionately known as Kapi, gracefully departed from this world on May 12, 2023, in Kailua, Hawai'i. Born on August 5, 1962, in Honolulu, Hawaii, Kapi's vibrant presence and remarkable talents left an indelible mark on the lives of those around her. With her captivating smile and mesmerizing Polynesian dance skills, she enchanted all who had the pleasure of knowing her.
Kapi's love for the beach was unparalleled, and her passion for life radiated through her every move. In 1980, she triumphed in the Miss Atlantis Bikini Contest, a testament to her undeniable beauty and magnetism. As a cherished haumana of Hula Halau o Pukaikapuaokalani, Kapi embodied the essence of Hawaiian culture and captivated audiences with her grace and charm. Her extraordinary qualities earned her numerous titles as a homecoming queen and princess, solidifying her place in the hearts of her community.
Left to cherish her memory are her beloved mother, Moana DeMello; her siblings, Kalani DeMello and Kainoa DeMello; her children, Christian Copp and Duke Koke'e Cabral; and her adored grandchildren, Kealohi and Kala Gosiaco. Kapi's legacy extends beyond her immediate family to aunties, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, as she touched the lives of countless friends, colleagues, and admirers.
Kapi held her alma mater, Kailua High School, dear to her heart. It was there that she forged lifelong friendships and cherished memories that accompanied her throughout her journey. She took great pride in being an alumna of her high school, forever grateful for the experiences and connections she made during her formative years.
A heartfelt ceremony to honor and celebrate Kapi's remarkable life will take place on Friday, November 3, 2023, from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm at the Waimanalo Hawaiian Homestead Halau. Attendees will be provided with pupus and lunch, offering an opportunity for reflection and the sharing of cherished memories. This gathering will serve as a testament to the profound impact Kapi had on those fortunate enough to have known her.
The departure of Kapi has left an irreplaceable void, but her spirit will forever radiate within the hearts of her loved ones. Through the stories, laughter, and love shared by those who were touched by her, her memory will live on. Let us take comfort in knowing that her legacy will continue to thrive for future generations.
