Donald's obituary

Donald Richard Patterson of Nottingham, MD passed away on May 19, 2022; he was 93. Don was born at home in Baltimore City to William Richard and Isabel Patterson on January 20, 1929. He was the younger of two children; his sister Phyllis was 3 years older. Don grew up in Baltimore City during the depression and worked many odd jobs at a young age to help support his family, including running carnivals with his Uncle Pete. He was drafted by the Army for WWII in 1946 but was discharged after he was diagnosed with pneumonia. He married Helen and had a daughter, Sharon Patterson. He later married Ruth and had a son, Donald King.  In 1962 he married Millie Hergenrather with two children from her previous marriage, Donna and Donald DiNicola (he later adopted both children) and eventually had two more children, Patricia and William.  During this time he operated a Gulf gas station on York Road for several years. In the late 1960s he became a truck driver of an 18-wheeler for Lewron Television, Inc., a producer of color films. After they went out of business, he was hired as a truck driver by Alban Tractor where he worked for 15 years until he retired in 1994.  Many who knew Don remember him fondly and would describe him as “a character, one-of-a-kind” because you never knew what he would do or say, but he always made you laugh. He was also the one to call if you were in trouble or needed anything. He loved working with his hands and would build fun things for his kids out of spare parts. He built a club house out of an old swing set and a go-cart out of spare wood and old tires. He ran behind the go-cart pushing it down the alley, then he jumped on the back to ride along. His other innovative ideas consisted of building coasters out of Popsicle sticks, a fan-on-a-stick from an old microwave fan, storage boxes decorated with stickers for multiple uses and pencil holders out of old McDonald’s french fry boxes, and he used them all for whatever he purposed. Even at 93 you would see him with two drills in his hands for hanging a clock on the wall. Don was a cherished father of six (6) children, Sharon Patterson, Donald King, Donna Williams, Donald Patterson, Patricia Patterson and William Patterson. Grandfather to Christen Patterson, Justin Walters, Becki Williams, Ashlie Walters, Christopher Williams and Gwendolyn Mitchell. He is also survived by 8 great grandchildren and several nephews. He was preceded in death by his sister Phyllis Feldmann, his wife Millie Patterson and his grandson Justin Walters. Don lived a good long life and will be truly missed.
