Donald's obituary
We regret to announce the peaceful passing of Mr. Donald Churchill Murdock on March 16, 2025, in Clermont, Florida, where he had recently settled after moving from Houston, Texas. Born on July 7, 1942, in Oracabessa, St. Mary, Jamaica, West Indies, Donald was a cherished son, beloved husband, revered father, adored grandfather, wonderful brother and a much-loved uncle. He was 82 years old at the time of his passing.
Donald spent his early years in the vibrant community of Airy Hill, Oracabessa, soaking up the rich cultural heritage of the area. In pursuit of new opportunities, he moved to Mandeville, Jamaica, where he resided until 1984. Following this, he relocated to Houston, Texas, which he warmly embraced as his cherished home for over forty years. In Houston, Donald thrived, quickly establishing himself within the community and forming many enduring friendships. His ability to connect with people and his infectious personality made him a well-loved figure in his local area. In 2022, Donald made Clermont, Florida, his home, drawn by the proximity to his siblings and in-laws. This move allowed him to cherish more frequent visits, as they were just a short car ride away, enhancing his ability to spend quality time with family.
Donald always held his alma mater, Calabar High School, in the highest regard, embodying the spirit of what it means to be a proud "Old Boy," the term affectionately used for male alumni in Jamaica. His deep pride in his educational background was evident throughout his life, often reflecting fondly on the formative experiences and the foundational values of character and resilience instilled in him at Calabar. This connection remained a core part of his identity, and he cherished the lifelong friendships and network he developed during his time at the school.
His early professional years were marked by significant roles at Alumina Partners of Jamaica and Desnoes and Geddes Limited. Upon moving to Houston, he transitioned to work at the Benjamin Franklin Savings Bank, and later pursued a path as a self-employed courier. During his retirement years, Donald took up a position at Home Depot in Houston, which he thoroughly enjoyed. It was more than just a job; it was a community where he made countless cherished friendships and continued to make a positive impact on those around him.
Married for over 55 splendid years to Monica Brown Murdock, Donald was a devoted family man. Together, they nurtured a loving family with their daughters, Tanya Sterling and Judy-Ann Hargrove. Donald was also a proud father to Carol Murdock and to his late son, Peter Murdock. As a grandfather, Donald took immense pride in his grandchildren: Eric Murdock, Leah Sterling, Ryan Sterling, Ethan Hargrove, Olivia Hargrove, and Grant Hargrove. He also cherished his role as an uncle to numerous nieces and nephews. His legacy of love and laughter remains vividly alive in their hearts, a testament to the deep bonds he formed and the joy he spread throughout his life.
Donald was preceded in death by his parents, Donald Percival Murdock and Viola McNaught Murdock, and his son, Peter Murdock. He is survived by his wife, Monica; daughters, Tanya (Jevaughn Sterling), Judy-Ann (Brian Hargrove), and Carol; siblings Claire Ashman, Winston Murdock, Polly Marshall, and Phyliss Brice; grandchildren; in-laws and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Donald was known for his sharp wit and spirited personality, often bringing a room to life with his clever remarks and lively banter. His love for crossword puzzles was legendary; there wasn't a puzzle he couldn’t conquer, a testament to his love of words and quick thinking.
An avid reader and lover of Shakespeare, Donald could recite passages from "Romeo and Juliet" by heart. He was a master gardener, known especially for his exquisite rose bushes and well-tended gardens that won him multiple "Yard of the Month" awards in Houston. His culinary skills were unmatched, specializing in Jamaican cuisine, delighting family and friends with his curry goat and traditional Jamaican breakfasts every weekend.
Donald's Sundays were famously marked by the sounds of Calypso music from the Mighty Sparrow as he joyfully prepared breakfast, a testament to his love for life. A man of many interests, he enjoyed channels dedicated to history and nature, though he could never resist the charm of a good Bugs Bunny cartoon.
Donald's life was a beautiful tapestry of dedication, love, and pride. As we say farewell, we celebrate the profound impact he had on every life he touched. His wisdom, warmth, and infectious smile will be dearly missed but forever remembered.
