Donald's obituary

Donald (Don) Latz Hoffman, born in Rochester, NY, died today at the age of 86. Don was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s several years earlier and he spent each day tenaciously clinging to his memories and daily routines for as long as he could. Don achieved the rank of Captain in the United States Air Force, serving as a fighter jet pilot stationed at airbases in Portland, Oregon and New Castle, Delaware. Don frequently shared proud memories of his squadron, Cave Tigrim. He also fondly told of a December 24 training drill where he was scrambled to chase a bogey in a lighted red sleigh. After the Air Force, he began his civilian career at Stromberg Carlson where he worked his way from lineman to the Executive Sales and Marketing team. He also worked with NEC and Telesciences. He retired in St James, Southport, North Carolina where he made many dear friends. If you spent more than a few minutes with Don, he’d have surely made you laugh. He was intelligent, quick-witted and charming. He was also driven and dedicated to whatever he did; he may not ever have missed a day of work. He loved golfing, fishing, diners, martinis, cookies and the movie “Twelve O’Clock High”. His smile and twinkling blue eyes are forever in our hearts. Don was predeceased by his wife, Cathy Hoffman (Bernardini) and six siblings: Ray Hoffman, Bob Hoffman, Marian Delles, Dorothy Minard, Shirley McLaughlin and Jean Hoffman. He is survived by his children and grandchildren: Lisa Hoffman (Dade City, FL), Jon Hoffman (Southport, NC) and Catherine Hoffman-Mehno (Union, NJ), Catelyn Hoffman, Nicholas and Caroline Mehno. Dad - Off you Go Into the Wild Blue Yonder…

Don and his wife will be interred in Vermont. Donations in Don’s memory can be made to the Alzheimer’s Association (Alz.org) or the Lower Cape Fear LifeCare Hospice.
