Donald's obituary
Donald William Hess, 87, of Charleston, SC, passed away on February 21st 2024 surrounded by his family.
Donald was born on October 14th, 1936 to Fred & Luneal Hess in Charleston, SC. Donald lived the majority of his life in Charleston and after graduating High School, he joined the military and served his county as a proud member of the Air Force.
After an honorable discharge from the Air Force, Donald provided for his family working many years in route sales distribution. In retirement Donald loved playing golf and took a part-time job at a local golf course and enjoyed sharing the sport of golf with others. In his lifetime he achieved two “Hole-In-One’s”.
Donald married his wife Trudy McAteer Hess where they shared 50+ years together until her passing in 2020. Donald is survived by his and Trudy’s only son Brian Hess of Charlotte NC, daughter in-law Lisa Hess, grandchildren Graycen Elwood and Dylan Hess and cousins Pat Everett and Barbara Elsey.
Donald’s passions in his spare time were boating, fishing, golf and baseball. His son and family have fond memories of the times spent together on the water, watching Braves baseball and his grandsons high-school games, weekend golf outings and playing side pick-up games of Half-Rubber, a game originated in the Lowcountry, with all the neighborhood kids.
Donald was preceded in death by his parents Fred & Luneal Hess.
A celebration of life will take place at Live Oak Memorial Gardens in Charleston, SC on March 9th at 1pm. This will be a small gravesite service; in lieu flowers we ask that you donate to the American Legion Post 535 that took Donald in as a member.
