Donald's obituary
Donald Henry Smith, a long-time resident of Lafayette, Louisiana and a man known for his boundless generosity, his deep affection for pugs and other animals, a spirited love for basketball, and a heart as vast as the DC Comics universe he cherished, passed away on May 1, 2025, in Alamogordo, New Mexico. He was 69 years young, having been born on October 31, 1955.
Donald’s life was marked by an extraordinary capacity for kindness and a genuine interest in the well-being of others. His generous spirit touched countless lives, leaving an indelible mark on all who had the pleasure of knowing him. Beyond his giving nature, Donald held a special place in his heart for his beloved pugs and other animals, who undoubtedly brought him immense joy and companionship throughout the years. He also found great pleasure on the basketball court, enjoying both the camaraderie and the thrill of the game. For those that knew him well, his passion for DC and Marvel Comics was undeniable, a source of endless fascination and spirited conversation. Often times, Donald could be seen joyriding around town in his 2005 torrid red Pontiac GTO, which he often stated was a “vulgar display of power.” And he had an unwavering love for Star Trek new and old, to which we say, “Warp speed, Mr. Sulu,” and, “I have always been and shall be your friend, live long and prosper.”
Family was the center of Donald’s world. He is lovingly remembered by his children, Jason Haberman (Betty), Maria Smith, Brandi Pagitt, and Karla Seal (Jacob), all of whom survive him. He is also survived by his mother, Donnis Shirley, and his siblings, Babbette VanDevender, Bridget Montoya, Debbie Hope-Krell, Ed Hope, Donny Smith, Charles Smith, Lorraine Sanchez, and Joyce Bart. Donald was predeceased by his son, Donald Francis Smith, his father, Donald Herman Smith, and his stepbrother, Edward Slack. His legacy continues through his cherished grandchildren, Emma Pagitt, Averie Pagitt, and Hyler Seal. He will also deeply be missed by his extended family, Sandra Richardson, Wanda Whitton, Margie Wilson, and Paula Wilson, along with numerous other relatives and friends.
After graduating from Pickering High School in 1973, Donald enlisted in the United States Air Force and was honorably discharged in 1977. Thereafter, Donald pursued his passion for knowledge at McNeese State University, graduating in 1980 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Physics. He then built a successful and dedicated career at Halliburton Energy Services, Inc. where he worked until his retirement in 2016.
A celebration of Donald’s life will be held at his home, affectionately known to him as his “Fortress of Solitude,” located at 408 East Martial Avenue, Lafayette, Louisiana 70508, on Sunday, June 1, 2025, from 10:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. Friends and family are invited to gather and share their memories of a man who brought so much warmth and kindness into the world.
Donald’s big heart and generous soul will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him. May his memory be a source of comfort and inspiration.
