Don's obituary
Hanefeld, Donald Gustav “Don” 96 of Laconia, NH passed away peacefully on February 18, 2024 surrounded by his family.
Don was born to the late Elmer Otto & Hazel M. (Mercer) Hanefeld in St. Paul, Ramsey, Minnesota on August 28, 1927. He was predeceased by his brothers Richard and Robert.
Don proudly served his country in the United States Navy. When Don’s ship was decommissioned, he attended a dance in Boston, MA and there he met the love of his life, Hazel. They married on July 4, 1948 and celebrated a very special 75 years of marriage in 2023. One of many fond family memories is the story of Don & Hazel hopping on their motorcycle and traveling across the country. They settled in Somersworth, NH and had two children, Kim and Kirk.
Don was a Mechanical Engineer having earned his Masters degree from UNH and was able to retire at the young age of 55. He enjoyed hiking & camping having done so at locations all around the country. He hiked Mt. Major in Alton, NH three times a week right up until age 86. Don basked in the beauty of nature. The times he hiked with his family brought him immeasurable joy.
