Donald's obituary

Donald Freeburg, 86, of Marshalltown, IA, passed away on August 17, 2022 after a long battle with colon cancer.

Donald was born on July 18, 1936 to George and Neva in Hitchcock . After graduating from high school in 1954, he went on to 1 year of college at SDSU. He left college to pursue farming.

Shortly after leaving school, he met his wife Shirley. The two were married in 1957.  The pair built a beautiful family, going on to have 4 children, James, John, Jody, and Jean. Don loved his grandchildren dearly; Christopher, Matthew, Jessi, Amber, Shannon, Casey, Danielle, and Alynnia, and many great-grandchildren.

Donald was a force of nature, determined to provide for his family and give them the life he felt they deserved. His family meant more to his than anything else in the world. He was devastated at the loss of his son James in 1999. Donald was a dedicated farmer and could often be found in the fields, at any hour, when he wasn’t at home.

Anyone who knew Donald knew that he was the most loving father and husband a family could ask for.

Donald was a hard working man but he had a zest for life. He enjoyed fishing, camping, snowmobiling, square dancing, singing hymns, and playing bridge.

Donald was a devoted Christian, and his faith in God and his church, helped him cope with his cancer these past 4 years. He was also a 57 year member of the Masonic Lodge and a Yuldez Shriner.

Donald was predeceased by his parents, George and Neva, his brother, and his son James. He is survived by his loving wife, his children, grandchildren, and great grandchild.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers, plant a tree in Don’s memory.

There will be a celebration of life on August 23. At this time this is for immediately family only, per Don’s wishes.
