Donald L. Coker, Jr., went to be with the Lord on April 16, 2021. He was born April 24, 1934 in Rockford, IL, where he spent his youth moving to a few different cities within the area. After graduating high school, on May 28, 1952, he moved to Boulder, Colorado, and attended Colorado University. He studied Geology and received a Bachelor’s of Arts degree on June 8, 1956. More importantly, while there, he met the love of his life, Ann L. Coker (McKenzie)! They had a short and sweet courtship and were married on October 7, 1956. Soon after, he went into the army and was sent to Europe. He was stationed in Zweibrücken, Germany, where Ann joined him for a little over a year. After being discharged, they moved back to La Junta, Colorado, and Don ended up working at the family business while looking for a job. It turned out he never left and helped run McKenzie’s Music and Furniture until retirement. While in La Junta, Don attended the Methodist church, was part of the Chamber of Commerce and was a member of Rotary. He also enjoyed designing sets for the community theater, Picketwire Players, as well as being an active part of the community.
After retiring in 2000, Don and Ann moved to Lake Worth, Florida, to be near their two children and twin granddaughters. They found a church there and he was asked to be on the board of directors. He also played bells in the choir and taught Sunday school. In retirement, he continued to do the things he loved most: spending time with family, being involved in church, traveling all over the world, (you should see all the pins on the map),playing bridge with friends, taking care of and fixing things around the house, drawing, painting, and doing puzzles. He did whatever he could do to keep busy!
Don is survived by his wife Ann Coker, daughters Linda Fernquist and Debbie Coker, granddaughters Ashley Fernquist and Nicole Fernquist Hertz and her husband Kurt, and his sister Judy Boers, his niece Pam and Matt Flowers (Boers) and nephew Rick and Laura Boers.
