Donny lived on Plainfield Drive in Payne, Ohio a few house west of ours. We became fast friends. There were a lot of kids in town during the boomer era and in the mid 60's football was our game. So much so that there were 2 or 3 whole, pre-high school teams that were organized by the kids that played in them. 
  In the distance, on the field beside the high school in August, you would start hear whistles blowing  fearsome chanting and leather snapping. Then on Thursday night the field lights for pregame warm up would come on like a landing field and we were there. The season had begun. 
    We would do the same. Donny was our quarterback. He wasn't big but he was fast. We would practice at night after school sometimes in backyards under a couple of floodlights until we had to come in. On Saturdays we would play other neighborhood makeshift teams in large fields, on the high school field or lawns. There was once even a field with a goal post and line markers thanks to one kid's dad. 
  We had our own equipment or not. It was more fun with helmets. Donny had a red helmet with 2 white stripes a double bar face guard. Sometimes the high school would get rid of the equipment and kid's would line up to get discarded helmets, pads, old footballs or ties. I once got an old oversized leather helmet that was probably more dangerous on my head than not wearing one at all. 
   There are no pictures of Donny then but vivid memories. Don, you made it to the defense's 28 yard marker then broke loose and ran to the goal line leaving the rest of us on the gridiron behind. I would say the game ended too soon.
