Don's obituary

Don Peters of Van Buren, Arkansas, passed away on August 2, 2023. He was 84 years old.

Don was born on August 19, 1938, to Noel and Grace Peters in Mountainburg, Arkansas. Don graduated from Mountainburg High School, where he pitched on the baseball State Championship team of 1957. Don attended the College of the Ozarks and Arkansas Teachers College (UCA) on a baseball scholarship where he earned his degree in Education. It was at UCA that Don met Janice Hurst, and they wed in 1963.

Following graduation, Don served in the Arkansas National Guard followed by a 15-year career coaching high-school sports in Eureka Springs, Alma, Pine Bluff and Clarksville, winning multiple district, regional and state championships. Don also officiated high-school basketball for over 10 years.

After teaching and coaching, Don operated and co-owned the River Valley Sporting Goods store in Clarksville, Arkansas and worked the dispatch and training department for JB Hunt.

Don retired to pursue his passion for farming for more than 20 years on his farm in Clarksville where he raised cattle and chickens for Tyson Foods.

He was preceded by his parents and brothers Darrell and Richard Peters. Don is survived by his wife Janice Hurst Peters, his son Brett Peters and wife Carmen, daughter Dixie Peters Stark and husband Jay, his three grandchildren, Allyson, Mackenzie, and Jared, and his three sisters, Evelyn Kelly, Venita Baker, and Connie Molder.
