Dolores's obituary

Dolores (Lola) Rios, 70, passed away peacefully with her family by her side on January 19, 2021. Dolores is survived by her siblings, Milagros, Miguel, and Lydia, her children, Lisa (Andrew) and Edward (Kristin), and her five precious grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, Miguel and Herminia, and her younger brother Rafael.
She was born in April 1950 in Santurce, Puerto Rico and grew up in the Bronx, New York, where she studied nursing, married, and began her family. Dolores led a life caring for others as a dedicated mother and nurse, working in many settings over forty years in healthcare, most notably at Brigham & Women’s Brookside Community Health Center in Jamaica Plain, MA. She loved serving her community, and her colleagues considered her a pillar of support and an inspiration both professionally and personally.
Lola’s hobbies and her relationships embodied a life in motion and a soul bursting with creativity and love. She was that “once in a lifetime” friend to so many people throughout the years. She always delivered her sage advice with compassion and a hug. She had a magical green thumb, and could tame the harshest desert sunshine and the bitter Northeast chill, to keep a spectacular garden evergreen and blooming. Lola had a knack for creating a home with a perfect balance of comfort and chaos, and the sense of possibility and forward motion in everything she set her mind to do. She loved to transform her surroundings with remodeling and restoration projects, decorating, painting stencils, designing wood and wrought iron pieces, upholstering furniture and generally never sitting still. She leaves behind a legacy of unmatched perseverance and fortitude, a profound appreciation of nature’s beauty, and a depth of love for her family and friends that cannot be described with mere words.
Due to COVID-19, a Celebration of Life will be scheduled at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you make a charitable donation to Editha House at edithahouse.org or the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network at Pancan.org.
