DICKEY's obituary

Matthew 25:21 NKJV

His lord said to him, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant; you were faithful over a few things, I will make you ruler over many things. Enter into the joy of your lord.’

Galations 6:9  And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will  reap, if we do not give up.

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of Dickey (Dick) Lynn Young from this earth onto his heavenly home on 12.23.2022.  Our ever faithful, sweet, sassy, engaging, and sometimes saucy friend, dad, Christian, grandad, father-in-law, uncle, husband and never ending Godly example was living with his second wife, Alpha Joyce Mullin Young (m3.2002) in Eureka, IL at his passing.   Dick was born  on 01.31.1932, in a farmhouse in Bridlebit, TX to  Robert  (Doc) Eugene Young (1961) and Tabitha  (Tabby) Ann Rivers Young (1965).  He was the " baby" of 10, 5 brothers and 4 sisters all deceased.  Dick had a contagious and infectious smile and personality, He loved music, singing, he was always on fire for the Lord , serving and helping others, going on Mission trips, chaperoning his daughter and the youth group at Avondale church of Christ, driving the bus on youth outings, having Bible studies, teaching Marriage classes, always encouraging, and putting others first.  He loved the Lord, his family,  grandkids, great grands, and friends above himself.   He lived larger than life and was always an encouragement to anyone that he met.   There is a huge void  because he is gone but he made a huge impact, showed us who Christ is by the way he lived,  and left a legacy that we are challenged to try to match!   He would want us to tell others about Christ and live for the Lord every day, putting our treasures in Heaven not on earth.    He was passionate, loving, spirited, driven, motivating, encouraging, compassionate, full of life, ornery, stubborn, fun, always up for a laugh or a hug, affectionate, romantic, and a lover of God first and foremost.  From a friend:  Ann Marie Webster:  (Jamaica/Chicago now) "nothing was too big or too small for Dick"!  That is how he lived his life, he would take on any challenge and give God the glory in everything he did.

"Dickey" (those that grew up with him called and still call him today) grew up in the panhandle of West Texas and his dad was a sharecropper.   He worked on the farm , rode his horse and loved his dog, Tarzan.  He attended Turkey High School where he played any and all sports.   He would stand in the field and watch the planes go over and wonder where they were going.  He would dream and say he wanted to go anywhere but Bridlebit TX.  He knew he wanted something more and would make it happen, and he did!  He and Jewel Eloise Stephens (2001) aka "Weezie and ("WeWe" to her grandkids), from Memphis/Tulia TX, went to school together, fell in love at a young age, and were married February 18, 1950.  They lived in Tulia TX for a while and he joined the Army in 1953 until 1955.  He was stationed in VA and Fort Campbell KY with the 101st Airborne.  He loved the military and was proud to serve his country. They moved to Plainview TX where they became faithful members of the church of Christ, thanks to several good friends that have gone on before them; Mid McKnight, JD Ellis, JW Hamby and Claude May and of course their wives. They were big on cottage meetings, studying the bible and teaching others about Christ.   While in Plainview, Dick worked for Warren White at Whites Supermarket as a Butcher, and opened and managed  a Texaco gas station in 1956.   In 1957, a huge blessing came along and they adopted, Stephen Lynn Young.  He was very loved and wanted, and they were devastated that he was extremely sick and did not live long.  Stephen passed away in Denton TX in 1965 at the age of 8.   In early 1960 they moved to Clovis NM to manage a bowling alley.  They were both very good bowlers and won many trophies.  In October 1960, another blessing came their way and through a close friend, Mid McKnight, and they adopted, Lisa Rene Young (Anderson).   Dick frequently tells the story of them picking Lisa up at the Hospital in Amarillo and watching in the rearview mirror all the way back to Clovis afraid someone was going to stop them and take her away!!  Their lives were never the same!!   Then on to Grants NM, they managed another bowling alley and then went into the new "blow in" insulation business with a friend that eventually took them to Irving, TX in 1963.  Dick loved the outdoors and loved working in the yard.  He won many Yard of the month awards while living in Irving and his love for yardwork continued throughout his life, it was therapy for him in many ways.  He loved the physical labor and instant gratification.  In 1968 Dick started in Sales with United Savings and Life/Transport Life Insurance company, and in 1970 was promoted to Executive Vice President. There was no stopping him, he could sell anything to anyone and was very good at what he did.  In 1972, his job transferred him to Atlanta, Georgia where he was again promoted to the Southeast Sales Manager.   He spent many  long hours away from home traveling, and mostly over night in trucking terminals selling life insurance and long term care policies to truckers.   He was extremely successful and would retire in 1990 (kind of).   He and Weezie traveled and he worked to pay for their trips as they went to the West Coast and up the East Coast and everywhere in between.  Of course this was after Lisa was married and gone.

Turning Point:  When they moved to GA their commitment was to "get back in church" and be steadfast and faithful.   They made it their LIFE and they lived it large; always teaching, encouraging, serving and helping  anyone that God put in their path.  Dick, Weezie, and Lisa were members at Avondale church of  Christ Decatur GA, from 1972-1988.   Dick was a Deacon, he taught Bible classes, Marriage classes, they both encouraged other couples in their marriages, worked with the youth  (chaperoned/drove the bus), and studied the Bible with anyone that would listen, he didn't take no for an answer, but people knew he sincerely cared about them and their soul; he was a true messenger for the Lord.   Lisa left for Lipscomb University in Nashville in 1979 after graduating from Greater Atlanta Christian school where they supported her in anything she was involved in.  Dick eventually retired, for good, and  they moved to Ellijay GA to be in the mountains.   They were active and faithful members of the Ellijay church of Christ, where they were very involved with mission trips to Jamaica for many years and teaching and leading Bible studies.  They traveled frequently with friends from both congregations through the years. They were always up for an adventure.  Just ask Ken and Jo White, Quinten and Joann Holloway, Carl and Brenda Wilson and Doug and June Gattis (both deceased and missed), these couples have been around the world and back again.  Weezie passed away in April 2001, and he was beyond lost and devastated.  They were married 51 years and had a beautiful marriage.   They were a blessing to many.

BUT, God had a plan!  A childhood friend, Joyce Mullin Guest, from Turkey TX saw the announcement where Weezie had passed away and contacted Dickey to express her condolences.  God had huge plans for this reconnection and they rekindled their friendship and were married in March 2002, at the Turkey church of Christ in Turkey TX.  Joyce moved from Turkey to Ellijay GA where they began their life and marriage that would last 21 years.  The original 3 unit Young family GREW by leaps and bounds immediately as Joyce had a large family. What fun the holidays were, and busy!  Dickey gained two daughters and their husbands, Cyndy and Mike Andrews and Jan and Ellis Augsburger and Lisa gained two sisters and brother in laws.   Over the years that clan grew with many grands and great grands, and marriages!  They continued to be active members of the congregation in Ellijay going on mission trips to Jamaica and supporting the work there.  They moved to Mountain  Home AR in 2008 to be closer to "the 3 girls - Cyndy, Jan, and Lisa".  They worshiped with the Mountain Home church of Christ until 2021 when they relocated to Eureka IL to a small retirement community close to Joyce's daughter, Jan Augsburger (Husband: Ellis) and their kids.  They worship with the Eureka church of Christ.  Dickey was not fond of the winters in IL but was adjusting  slowing while continually adjusting the thermostat to high temps, it was a constant battle!  He did not want to wear layers of clothes, he thought we needed to wear less.   He was a stubborn soul but always entertaining!

He is survived by:  Joyce Young, wife of 21 years, Eureka IL, Lisa Young Anderson, husband Mark of Gilbert SC,  Stephen Garrett Hogan (Cumming GA) wife, Kristena and 3 children, Carter, JJ and Makenzie.   Holley Lyn Hogan Booker (Nashville) husband, Adam Booker, and many other grands and great grands.
