Diane's obituary

Diane will always be remembered for her pure love and laughter, and for her lifelong love of animals. When given her choice of a childhood pet, Diane chose a horse to keep in the backyard. She named her paint horse “Painted Lady,” and her life revolved around horses from that point on. At her farm in Arbuckle, Diane created a paradise of horses, ponies, donkeys, mules, camels, goats, turkeys, ducks, doves, chickens, geese, housecats, barn cats, dogs, and loud and elegant peacocks.

Diane was the first female farrier in California, starting in 1974 under the tutelage of Tom Fisk of Orangevale. She created a mobile forge in her Datsun Pickup truck, and traveled throughout the central valley to work with her horse clients.  Diane was the only woman in the California State Farriers Association, and she held the role of Treasurer. From 1977-1979, Diane worked with Dr. Patricia Speck at the Williams Animal Clinic. In the 1980s, Diane joined the American Dairy Goat Association and bred, raised and showed American Alpine goats.

From 1980-2003, Diane brought smiles and cheer to countless people in Woodland as a checker at the Nugget Market. She thoroughly enjoyed interacting with people, and she always brightened a conversation with her laughter. Her nieces fondly remember her getting ready for work with beautiful dangly earrings and a bright smile.

Diane visited Australia in the 1980s, completing a trek across the outback on horses and camels. Following this adventure, Diane rescued camels through the American Camel Association. She provided corrals and lots of love and patience to rehabilitate several groups of camels at her Arbuckle farm.

In 2004, after retiring from The Nugget Market, Diane moved to Sparks, Nevada and then to Yuba City, California in 2006. In 2008, Diane moved to Redmond, Oregon, where she became an active member of the Redmond Senior Center. She greatly enjoyed being part of this community.

Diane has left a huge legacy of a love: a love for animals, a love for the Lord, and a love for family and friends.  She was also known for her direct, feisty and outspoken nature. We celebrate her strength, her laughter, and all the joy she brought to everyone she encountered.

This quote had a place of honor at Diane’s Arbuckle farm:
“I shall pass this way but once; any good that I can do or any kindness I can show to any human being; let me do it now. Let me not defer nor neglect it, for I shall not pass this way again.”

This is a poem that Diane wrote in Australia:
Thoughts in a Capsule

The Universe, planet, sky, and sea,
Continue to call, call, call to me...
Oh where would we be
Old Planet Divine,
Without our starship to guide us through time?

Through Queensland on horses whose
Stride was sure and fast,
to the 'Center' where 'The Rock' and
Olgas did cuss us, alas.
We came and united together though
the TEAM method, each one of us
for ALL.
We went to 'Alice'
where the camels we rode,
For a Safari back in time
And new lessons unfold.
We learned of their regal gentleness
From up-high on their backs.
As they carried us through canyons
And sand dunes
Then 'Hooshed' us back.

The Dolphins called from
Monkey Mia's shore...
As we journeyed nearer and nearer
We could feel their thoughts
More and more.
Their never-ending smiles
Would greet us each day,
And their silky flowing touch
Would make you want to stay.

Though our Journey was ending,
it had really just begun,
Like a never-ending story,
We are united as one.

The Universe, planet, sky, and sea,
Continue to call, call, call to me...
Oh where would we be
Old Planet Divine,
Without our starship to guide us through time?
