Diane's obituary
Diane J. Grzymko 1950-2025
Diane Jaeckel Grzymko, beloved Mother, Wife, Aunt, and Grandmother, 75.
Diane Lynn (nee Jaeckel), of Byram, 75, an inspiration and loving mother to all, passed away peacefully on July 26, 2025, surrounded by her loving family.
A Celebration of Diane’s Life will be held at the American Legion Post 86, 20 Yates Ave, Newton, NJ 07860 on Saturday, August 9, 2025 from 12 pm until 3 pm.
She was born on July 2, 1950, in Elizabeth, NJ, to Harold and Isabelle. Her supportive parents instilled a love of the outdoors and nature in all their children. Following high school, Diane attended Montclair State College before beginning her work as a Home Economics Teacher and Twirling Advisor at Pompton Lakes High School. A resident of Byram for over 40 years, Diane was an active member of the community, volunteering in various roles focused on nurturing and developing young minds. This included her roles as President of the Byram Township Board of Education, Den Mother in Cub Scouts, Sunday School teacher, and board member of the Growing Stage Theater.
Undeterred by the accident in 1973, which left her unable to walk for the rest of her life, Diane saw this as an opportunity to teach others that while a disability may change your life, it does not have to derail it. Some of her fondest memories were attending sporting events and concerts with her family and friends. She also continued her active lifestyle and seized every opportunity to enjoy life to its fullest! Diane enjoyed fishing and participating in wheelchair sports, including basketball, tennis, snow skiing, water skiing, swimming, skydiving, and flying in gliders. Drawing on these life experiences, Diane pioneered a Peer Counseling Program at Kessler Rehab in West Orange, helping many families cope with similar situations.
Diane wanted to start a family of her own, and her children meant the world to her. As a Home Ec teacher, she truly enjoyed sewing and making dresses and crafts. Diane was always cooking and baking, and she was happiest when her kitchen was full, especially during holidays. Kyle and Troy were truly blessed to have shared their loving mother with their friends, who all knew her simply as “Mom.” She was always willing to lend an ear and made sure that no one ever went home with an empty stomach.
Diane was predeceased by her parents, Harold and Isabelle (Kennedy) Jaeckel, as well as her siblings, James and Barry Jaeckel.
Diane is survived by her husband John of Byram, New Jersey, son Kyle and his wife Kristen of Sandyston, son Troy and his wife Jennifer of Spring, Texas, grandchildren Annabelle, Kyler, Lillian, and Tylin, and by many beloved nieces, nephews, and a vast network of friends who Diane always considered to be her extended family.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to The Growing Stage Theater in Netcong, NJ.
