Col. Dharmendra Singh, Indian Army Retired, 58 of Billerica, passed away on Monday, June 24, 2019 at Massachusetts General Hospital.
Born in Etah, Uttar Pradesh, India on January 14, 1961, Dharam was son of Dr. Harbans Singh and Mrs. Nawab Kaur.
He belonged to Hindu Sirohi Jat lineage and his ancestors hailed from Saidpur village of Bulandshahr district in Uttar Pradesh, India.
Dharam did his schooling from Sainik School, Ghorakhal, Uttarakhand and graduated in March 1977.
Thereafter he got admitted into St. Stephen's College, Delhi University to pursue Mathematics (Hons.) in the dream to pursue Indian Administrative Services.
In Autumn of 1977, he was selected into prestigious National Defence Academy (NDA), Khadakwasla, Pune. He graduated from NDA in Autumn semester 1980.
From there he went to Indian Military Academy (IMA), Dehradun to train as an Infantry Officer of the Indian Army. Dharam was commissioned as 2nd Lieutenant into 10th Battalion of the Bihar Regiment on 19th December 1981.
During his tenure in the Army he was posted in the Kashmir Valley for Counter Insurgency (CI) and Counter Terror(CT) operations. He was awarded Chief of the Army Staff Commendation Citation for bravery in 1998.
He did high altitude deployments, including a memorable tenure along the Indo-China border in Arunachal Pradesh which is 14,000 FT above sea-level.
Dharam did his PhD is Human Resource Management while serving in Indian Army.
After long, faithful, honorable and distinguished service in Indian army, he retired in October 2003, Dharam immigrated to Massachusetts, USA in 2004 with his wife and two sons.
He worked for US Federal and lastly held the position of Immigration Officer for United States Citizenship and Immigration Services at Boston Field Office.
Dharam was an avid learner for life and always shared his knowledge and experience with his students at North Central University where he taught subjects like Business Statistics, Research Methodologies and adjudicated dissertation of PhD thesis.
Dharam was an avid Yogi and a vegetarian who enjoyed long walks, healthy lifestyle and loved being connected with the nature.
Dharam is survived by his wife, Poonam, by this two boys, Aditya Sirohi and Akshaya Sirohi; two grandsons Nihaal Sirohi and Viraat Sirohi.
He will be missed and remembered greatly by the posterity of his era comprising of village elders, his Sisters Kumud, Sarla, Madhuri and Brothers Yogendra and Bupendra.
Dharam selfless contribution and affection will continue inspiring the present and future progeny.
