Background

Devina is our beautiful momma. Mum was first diagnosed with endometrial cancer in 2018. Unfortunately, there is very little awareness and exposure to pre-cancer screenings in Fiji. Not surprisingly, our mum was not aware of and failed to recognize signs that "something was wrong" until it was already too late.

Following a successful surgery and radiation in 2018, yet again, there were very few follow-up screenings and tests available to mum in Fiji. Mum's cancer returned this year with a vengeance. By the time we tried to seek medical help for her in New Zealand, her cancer had spread too extensively for doctors to be able to successfully intervene. Doctors in New Zealand did perform surgery in May this year, but ultimately, let us know her cancer had metastasized and they couldn't safely remove her cancer. Why New Zealand? Because even the best doctors in Fiji advised that cancer treatment in Fiji isn't up to par.

Mum was given the choice of chemotherapy, immunotherapy, or hormone therapy. She opted for hormone therapy given it was the least harsh option and it enabled her to return to her home in Fiji. Unfortunately, the hormone therapy did not work for her as hoped, and her cancer continued to ravage her inside. In the end, mum decided to remain in Fiji and she did not want to be hospitalized.

Fiji has very limited options for palliative or hospice care for cancer patients. Resources and treatment options are also very limited in Fiji for cancer patients. We are blessed to have been able to afford private medical care for mum, and we were able to set up hospice care for mum at home with the help of her medical team. We are very grateful and indebted to have the guidance, care, and daily support from Dr. Sailasa (Zens Medical Center) . In addition, we had amazing support from nurse aid Makalesi (Zens Medical Center), and caregiver Rusila.

Through our journey with mum, we became very starkly aware of the limited resources and support in Fiji and the realization that the cost of care is not within reach for the average person in Fiji. We want to collect donations in mum's name and will donate 100% of all proceeds received to the organizations and people who helped our sweet mum during her battle, in hopes that they can help others in Fiji who, like us, are struggling to find meaningful support. We are asking for donations through this platform specifically because these organizations do not have an option to collect donations directly online.

If you are moved to help us in our cause, we will really appreciate any support you can provide.

Vinaka (Thank You).
