Background
Alem's life began on the other side of the world. Born in Eritrea, Africa, during the Ethiopian Eritrean civil war, a long, and dangerous, journey made way for an even longer and more dangerous childhood in Khartoum, Sudan.
Eventually she and her family landed in America where she traversed the prickly path all immigrants must in order to rise. And rise she did.
Once independent, Alem would go on to spend several years as a caretaker for adults with special needs, a foster mother to a handful of children beyond her own, and a Dean's List graduate of Marist College, double majoring in Special Education and Psychology.
From the very beginning, many people and programs made it possible for these events to be apart of her life story. The people who hid and protected her and family in a country they were not allowed to be in, the organization willing to relocate a nine person family across the ocean to safety, the programs that covered a portion of her college tuition, and much more.
Over the last several years, Alem worked closely with her daughter on initiatives within the International Rescue Committee to not only aid in the relocation of immigrants and refugees, but to create ways to allow them to become independent and prosperous. As an immigrant herself, she was elated to be apart of giving back to people who mirrored her, regardless of where they were from. Contribute to International Rescue Committee
