I wasn’t able to secure plane tickets but I will attend via Zoom.

But on a good note and in honor of my beloved Professor Dr. Derek Joseph Afatadae Wilson, I completed the race I AM now a college grad.

I dedicate the completion of this journey to him. What he poured into me I shall pour into others. This is what “UMBUTU” means.

I AM because of him and others shall be the same. I shall continue to pour in others.

With a Heart Filled and with Love and Adoration, I salute The Late Great Dr. Derek Joseph Afatadae Wilson,

Karen Castleberry                                 Grambling State University.                       Class of 2024

I was already enrolled at Southern University, when I received a letter from FAMU Sakhu. I called the brothers who signed the letter to tell them I appreciated their letter, but that I was not coming to FAMU.  Derek told me to  come to FAMU, period. I was not accepted into FAMU, had no financial aid, no where to stay, no family or friends in Tallahassee, no job, no money, nothing. On the strength of Derek [who was a student, not faculty/staff], I left Southern and showed up at FAMU. He treated me like a little sister, loaned me his books and allowed me to stay at his apartment. Because of him, I was able to stay at FAMU where I met my husband. We have three sons who currently attend FAMU. My oldest is a drum major, my middle is a J School major, and my youngest is in Agribusiness. All of this came to be because Derek represented true African warrior scholarship.

Dear Family, colleagues, and PV children of Dr. Wilson. I want to thank you all for giving being a strong community in this time of change. God allowed us to be impacted by Dr. Wilson, and if he made that impact with you then I know it was a powerful one. Personally, I wouldn’t be where I am without his intervention. I’m happy to have known him. Let’s make him proud by following the steps he laid before us. Much love, JE.
