Words alone cannot adequately capture the impact Derek had on my life and the lives of so many others. Derek was such a kind, intelligent, caring, and loyal man, a big and deep thinker with a sense of adventure. He has made a positive difference in this world, and I will miss him so very much. I remember the first time I held him shortly after he was born, a sweet baby boy in his yellow onesie with the strawberry, and felt how I loved him and how loved he was. I remember visits to our house when he was little, and later along with little Libby, bursting through the front door full of exuberance and stories. How I loved to hear his imaginative stories! In later years, after Michael was born, Derek was a wonderful role model, a big cousin Michael looked up to and learned much from. Michael wanted to emulate Derek, as you can see from a favorite photo I posted – Derek was sporting the style of wearing a cool cap indoors; Michael wanted to do the same but with his toddler winter hat with ear flaps, with Derek’s gentle amusement evident. Derek’s loving patience is also shown in another favorite photo where Derek gave Michael a first guitar lesson, sharing his love of music. We’ve had wonderful family times together, too many over the years to recount, including our many Christmas memories full of love and laughter. I remember another outing in Chicago, where Derek expertly led us through the city, to Billy Goat, along the River Walk, and where we stopped for a respite overlooking the Lake where Derek regaled his experience of skydiving. He was such an entrancing storyteller, I felt like I was there. He was an adventurer! His many travels, boldly experiencing life in many different cities and areas of the country, visiting national parks, and capturing truly amazing photos. I will always cherish the tradition he started of gifting me one of his beautiful photos every Christmas. These have been on display in my office, where Derek’s gallery evokes many comments and much joy. They now serve as a loving remembrance and tribute to Derek. Love you forever, Derek. May you rest in eternal peace, love and joy.
“Thanks for your the Metal Haven trips, and for most of all, Rock Band Summer, dude.  Wish we could have spent more time together.
