Derek's obituary
Derek Alan Messerly, 30, of Wheeling, WV passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, September 4th, 2019.
Derek was born on January 2nd, 1989 in Wheeling, WV to Clarissa (Tracy) Neff. He was adopted by Daniel and Marcy Messerly (Whipkey) at the age of five. He graduated from Indian Creek High School in 2007 where he was a part of the wrestling team. Derek then went on to enlist in the United States Army.
Upon separation from the military due to a spinal injury, Derek enrolled in college and received his Network Systems Administration degree in 2016. Derek was preparing to enroll at West Liberty University to further his education and obtain a degree in social work. He loved to help people and believed that social work was his calling. His choice of employment at the Children’s Home of Wheeling reflected this desire. Derek is survived by his wife Veronica Lynn Messerly, his children Alexa Star Messerly and Riot Alan Messerly, his adoptive parents Daniel and Marcy Messerly, his biological mother Tracy Neff, and his siblings Wyatt Messerly, Daniel Messerly, Lynsey Neff, Audra Neff, Kathy Corral (Hudgins) and his spirit twin Jessica Burke. Derek also leaves behind the many loving individuals who played a parental role to him, Shawn and Maggie McGinnis of Steubenville, OH, and Gerald and Roxanne Martin of Syracuse, NY. Derek is deeply loved by so many and he will be greatly missed.
All arrangements will be handled privately by Derek's family.
