Barney's obituary
Barney was born on May 3, 1955 to parents Daphne (Aunt Chal) Solomon and Godfrey Smikle in Old Harbour Bay, St. Catherine, Jamaica. He graduated from Old Harbour Secondary School in 1972. His secondary family, Percy and Merle Williams and their children, were there to help him along in life after both his parents migrated when he was in his teens.
After graduating from Old Harbour Secondary School, Barney attended a trade training center in White Marl, Spanish Town, Jamaica, where he successfully completed two courses - certified Machinist and certified Defensive Driver. He then went to work at a clothing factory in Old Harbour, fixing their machines and ensuring that they were in good working condition. When that factory closed, he bought a car and went into the taxi business, plying the Old Harbour Bay to Old Harbour route. After about 10 years of being a taxi driver, he became a driver for JPS, kicking off a 30+ year-long career with them.
In 1975, he met and later married Tatsy Smikle (nee Ludford), and together they had two children, Mark (Harry Fowl) and Kellee (Cheyenne) Smikle.
After retiring in 2011, Barney migrated to Florida and spent his time with his family, playing his music and fixing anything he could get his hands on. Back in Old Harbour Bay, you could hear him coming from a mile away from the music in his car. To know him was to love him, and he was always willing to lend a helping hand to anyone who needed help. He is remembered by all for his kind and humble demeanor and spirit.
Barney was predeceased by his Mom, Daphne (Aunt Chal) and Dad, Godfrey. He is survived by his wife Tatsy and two children, Mark and Kellee, seven grandchildren (Dakaylia, Damacio Jr. (DJ), Markeisha, Damaria, Markaylia, Darreon, and Markianna) as well as five brothers (Junior, Errol, Collin, Conrad, Courtney), four sisters ( Marilyn (a.k.a. Jennifer), Telese, Gail, Carol (a.k.a. Kim)), many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. Special recognition to cousins Lavern and Rita, who were like sisters to Barney, and John, Andrew, and Sal Williams, who were like siblings to him as well. Godchildren Camille Williams and Mark Harrison were always there for him as well. He was loved by all who knew him, and will be missed dearly.
