Dennis's obituary

In Loving Memory of Dennis Serrette (September 8, 1940 - March 7, 2024)

Dennis L. Serrette, a passionate advocate for civil rights, labor rights, and social justice, passed away peacefully while surrounded by family on March 7th at the age of 83. Dennis leaves behind a legacy of tireless activism, unwavering dedication, and boundless compassion that touched countless lives.

Born in Harlem on September 8, 1940, Dennis embarked on a remarkable journey marked by his fervent commitment to equality and empowerment.

Dennis served his country with honor as a veteran of the U.S. Air Force during the Vietnam era. Upon his return to New York, he became deeply involved in labor organizing, founding the Communication Workers of America Black Caucus and serving as its first president. Throughout his career, he held various leadership positions within CWA and was a founding member and first national organizer for the Coalition of Black Trade Unionists (CBTU), advocating consistently for the rights of workers and minorities.

A trailblazer in the fight against racism, Dennis led numerous initiatives and movements aimed at dismantling systemic oppression. From organizing anti-racist marches to advocating for the overturning of discriminatory decisions, from leading the coalition to save Sydenham Hospital to fighting to save the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture, he fearlessly championed the cause of equality and justice.

Dennis ran for United States President in 1984 as an independent candidate committed to social justice and equity.

Dennis' impact extended beyond national borders, as evidenced by his leadership in the struggle to free Nelson Mandela and his involvement in international solidarity movements.

A visionary leader and educator, Dennis dedicated himself to empowering others, whether through teaching at institutions like New York University or creating cutting edge programs for the CWA Minority Leadership Institute. His commitment to nurturing future generations of leaders was unparalleled.

Dennis married his soulmate, Cathy Hollenberg, in 1985. The two walked side by side in love and struggle for justice for all.

Dennis Serrette's legacy will live on in the hearts and minds of all who were fortunate enough to know him. His indomitable spirit, unwavering courage, and relentless pursuit of justice will continue to inspire generations to come.

Dennis is survived by his beloved wife, Cathy Hollenberg Serrette, his ten children, twenty-five grandchildren, and numerous great-grandchildren, as well as a vast network of family, friends, colleagues, and admirers who were touched by his extraordinary life.

Dennis’ memorial service will be held on Saturday,  April 20, 2024, 11:00 a.m. at the National Education  Association, 1201 16th St., N.W., Washington, D.C. 20036. Dennis Serrette may have left this world, but his legacy of love, compassion, and activism will endure forever. Rest in power, dear friend.
