Denny's obituary

Dennis Neil McKinlay passed away in Mazatlán, Mexico on Thursday, 10/29/2020 due to heart failure. Denny was born in Olympia, WA on July 12, 1945 to John aka Jack and Betty (Preman) McKinlay and spent most of his life in the Olympia area. He attended North Thurston High School and then joined the US Navy in 1963 where he served aboard the USS Enterprise during the Vietnam War.

Denny married Trudy Danzer on November 6. 1966 and was ready to celebrate their 54 years of marriage prior to his passing. While he did not speak of it very often, his greatest joys in life were his wife Trudy and his two children and 5 grandchildren. Denny worked in the construction industry for several years before realizing he wanted something more. With his strong work ethic and determination to succeed, he started his own company, D&D Overhead Door. The business opened in 1974 and Denny retired from the company in 1993.

He is survived by his loving wife Trudy and his two children and their families: son John of Tenino, John’s wife Rhonda and their children Zachary and Matthew; daughter Danyell of Lacey, Danyell’s husband Louis and their children Kayli and Nathan. He is also survived by his sister Anne of Tenino; brother Dennis of Lacey; brother Michael of Olympia.

Denny enjoyed the many friendships he had created over the years. Together, Denny and Trudy spent their summers in Washington, but they avoided the cooler, wet northwest winters, and lived most of their retirement in Mazatlán. While in Mazatlán, Denny enjoyed spending time with Trudy and walking on the Malecon, visiting with friends at the local watering hole and playing golf.

Due to the pandemic, there are no current plans for a memorial service, but the family hopes to hold a celebration of life when it is safe.
