Dennis's obituary

CLAYTON – Mr. Dennis Lee King, 82, of Clayton, NC, died Saturday, June 18th at the SECU Hospice House in Smithfield, NC after battling multiple health issues.

Born in Pittsburgh, PA, Dennis spent his childhood in and around the Pittsburgh area until he went off to university in Columbus, OH. He is a 1963 graduate of Capital University where he earned a degree in English and where he met his wife. He spent 8 years teaching at Wheeling Country Day school in Wheeling, WV before spending two years traveling the country with his family in an Airstream. As a young father, Dennis enjoyed the outdoors with his children often camping, canoeing or hiking.

In 1975 Dennis attended Trinity Lutheran Seminary and on August 22, 1976, he was ordained a Lutheran minister at St. Mark Lutheran Church in Wheeling, WV. Dennis was called to serve at Trinity Lutheran Church in Weirton, WV where he served until 1981 when he and his family moved to Sarasota, FL. While living in Sarasota he served at Holy Cross Lutheran Church and Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Venice, FL until his retirement in 2002. At the time of his passing Mr. King was an active member of Lord of Life Lutheran Church in Garner, NC.

Dennis is preceded in death by his mother, Stella Weir King; his father, Leo King; sister, Beverly King Swickey and brother Norman A. Eberts. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Virginia Mitchell King of Clayton, NC, daughters Heidi King Moravcik of Wake Forest, NC, and Heather King, of Lady Lake, FL; son William King of Clayton, NC as well as four grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and his brother Dr. Brian Eberts of Uniontown, PA.

Local memorial service was held at 12 pm on Sunday, July 31st at the Lord of Life Lutheran Church, 2100 Buffaloe Rd., Garner, NC. 

Dennis will be laid to rest in the family mausoleum at Greenwood Cemetery in Wheeling, WV on Saturday, September 3rd following a service at St. Mark's Lutheran Church in Elm Grove at 11 am. 

Memorial contributions may be made to Trinity Lutheran Seminary – Capital University via capconnect.org/donate. The designation should be made by selecting the “Trinity Fund”
