Dennis's obituary

Dr. Dennis P. Girard, 76, passed away on June 8, 2024, in Lincoln, Massachusetts. Born on May 8, 1948, in Lowell, Massachusetts, Dennis led a life marked by intellectual curiosity, professional dedication, and generosity of spirit.

Early in his career, he established a psychotherapy practice in Brookline and served as a psychologist at the Boston Evening Clinic. His commitment to advancing mental health care led him to become certified in psychopharmacology, which enabled him to take on roles at New England Baptist Hospital and Beth Israel Hospital. Known for his clinical expertise and warm, engaging bedside manner, he earned the respect of patients, nurses, and fellow physicians alike.

Dennis was actively involved in the American Psychological Association and remained devoted to education throughout his life. As an instructor at Harvard Medical School, he taught clinical interviewing to first-year medical students and participated in role-playing scenarios to help students navigate complex patient interactions. This endeavor combined his love of teaching with his theatrical flair.

When the Boston Evening Clinic transitioned into a foundation, Dennis played a pivotal role in preserving its mission. His efforts helped establish an endowment that continues to support healthcare services for low-income individuals.

Beyond his professional accomplishments, Dennis was a man of many passions. He was an active member of the Sudbury Opera Lovers Organization and had a deep appreciation for music. He possessed encyclopedic knowledge on topics ranging from classic cars to culinary delights and took special pride in his cooking and impeccable sense of style.

Two of the great joys of his later life were the family’s poodle, Whiskey, and the island of Bermuda. Whiskey was Dennis’s faithful companion in the final months of his life and was known by everyone in the neighborhood. She now lives happily with a family friend in Vermont. Dennis and his family vacationed yearly in Bermuda for almost 30 years. He followed island politics closely in The Royal Gazette, befriended members of Parliament, and often connected with Bermudians traveling to Boston for medical care. His expansive knowledge of the island—its history, people, and hidden gems—was matched only by his affection for it.

Dennis loved his family deeply. His care for his wife, Kathy, and his daughter, Lauren, was constant throughout his life. In his final years, he delighted in his grandchildren, Lucy and Leo.

Dennis was survived by his wife, Kathleen Girard, who passed away the following year, and by his daughter, Lauren Girard; son-in-law, Ryan Quinn; granddaughter, Lucy; and grandson, Leander. He was predeceased by his mother, Rita, and his father, Sylva.

A private memorial service was held in Newton, Massachusetts.

May Dennis’s memory bring comfort to all who knew him and continue to inspire those whose lives he touched.
