Delores's obituary

Delores "Granny Dee" Burgess gained her angel wings and left this earth during the Super Flower Moon on Sunday, May 15, 2022, at the age of 90 in North Platte, Nebraska.

Delores was a beacon of strength and deeply loved by many. Her son, daughter, granddaughters, great-grandkids, siblings, nieces, nephews, and friends all knew her to be independent, creative, hard-working, and spirited until the end.

Delores was born in March 1932 to Henry and Margie Dobrovolny and grew up on a ranch in Atkinson, Nebraska. She was the third of 11 children, eight sisters and three brothers.

As a young girl, she spent long days on the hayfield. She used horses for farming,  planted substantial vegetable gardens, milked cows, raised chickens and turkeys, fixed up the old farmhouse, and rode the pastures to watch over the livestock.

On August 12, 1957, she married her best friend, Darius Burgess, in Pierre, South Dakota. Together they had two children, Rick and Tonia. Delores and Darius raised their family in Valentine and North Platte and then moved to Las Vegas in 1979.

Delores loved learning and was always very industrious. After graduating from Atkinson High School, she continued her education at the Norfolk Junior College, McDonald Belton in North Platte, and Clark County College in Las Vegas.

Over her career, she taught school in Holt County, and some of her younger siblings ended up being her students. She and Darius owned and operated Burgess Trucking Co., a Livestock and Grain Trucking business. She also worked for Northwestern Bell, First National Bank, Bank of America, New Generations, Ray Bacon Enterprises, and the Cherry County Sheriff's office before or after retiring from the State of Nevada after 20 years of service in 1997.

On May 28, 1994, Darius Burgess passed away in Las Vegas, Nevada. Delores moved back to Nebraska in 2002 to be closer to family.

Delores found joy in bottle feeding baby calves and lambs, raising chickens and ducks with her children, traveling, gardening, feeding the hummingbirds, creating ceramics, crocheting, writing short stories, and putting together photo albums. She also volunteered for many organizations and, most recently, was an active member in the American Legion Auxiliary, Post 90 of Valentine.

Delores's ashes will be buried next to Darius Burgess at the Mount Hope Cemetery in Valentine, Nebraska.
