Delaine's obituary

Delaine Ashwana Stone Carlisle, 65, of Berkeley, CA, passed away on Saturday, August 28, 2021 after a fierce battle with illness.

Ashwana was born March 28, 1956 to Harriet Tamplin Stone and Leroy Stone in Atlanta, Georgia. She was the youngest daughter of nine children. After graduating from Frederick Douglass High School, she was proud to have been accepted to the prestigious Oglethorpe University where she planned to study dentistry. Her plans changed when she moved to the Bay Area where she went on to study English and Photography at University of California, Berkeley.

After graduation, she was an English tutor at Berkeley Alternative High School (B-Tech). She was of tremendous help with the establishment of Acta Non Verba: Youth Urban Farm Project (ANV) and a founding worker-owner of The Healing Kitchen Catering, both founded by her oldest and youngest daughters, Kelly and Kana.

She was married to Keith L. Carlisle of Cleveland, OH, in 1979 and separated in 2014. Between 1979 and 1986, Ashwana, gave birth to four children, Kelly, Djuan, Daranisa and Kana.

When Ashwana had Kelly, she decided to dedicate her life to being a fantastic and wonderful mother, educator and artist. Ashwana excelled at propping up Kelly, Djuan, Daranisa and Kana and supporting them through the many passions and difficulties of their lives. Whether that was supporting Kelly through her math-phobia and untamed imagination or encouraging her grandchild, Kaiyah to find and cultivate their purpose, she made it her mission to be a positive presence in her families’ lives. She was well known for spreading her love of Black History (month) and Kwanzaa through celebrations, education and art in local school districts and throughout the community.

Ashwana was an avid reader. When she wasn’t filling her home with warmth and kindness, she was home writing her memoirs, tending her garden, and practicing her Kuumba (creativity) through her many art projects and creations. We will miss her greatly.

Ashwana was predeceased by her father Leroy Stone, mother Pastor Mildred Tamplin Stone, brothers Harold and Lester C. Stone and granddaughter Gianna Berry. She is survived by her children Kelly, Djuan, Daranisa and Kana; her grandchild, Kaiyah; her siblings, David L. Stone, Minister Barbara A. Stone, Willie J. Stone, Clifford (Cecelia) Stone, Rosa Mae Gay and Delano Stone; nieces and nephews, and a host of other loving relatives, family friends and plant babies.

The family requests that all flowers and notes are sent to 3320 King St. Apt. A Berkeley, CA 94703. There will be a celebration of life on Saturday, September 18, 2021 from 10am -2pm at ANV’s Farm at Tassafaronga (1001 83rd Ave. Oakland, CA 94621).
