Dee's obituary
Decator Corey Overby Sr., 76, of Monroe, Georgia, passed away on 22 August 2021. He was born to parents Vera Marie Brumfield and Walter Herman Overby, on 09 October 1944 in Blairs, Virginia.
Decator, or Dee, made lifelong friends after moving to Greensboro, NC. He is remembered for playing football, baseball, basketball and being voted best looking by the Sumner High School Class of 1963.
He went on to study history and play tennis for the University of North Carolina at Wilmington where he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts. Decator was the first in his family to graduate from college.
Dee had a brilliant mind, was a talented handyman and hard worker who held many positions over the years. He worked most recently as a maintenance technician for Publix Distribution Center. After 10 years of service, he retired from there in 2011 and has enjoyed a full and active retirement with his wife of 55 years.
He had a passion for sports and enjoyed sharing his love of play with his children and grandchildren. He rarely missed an opportunity to watch his grandchildren play sports and was a devoted fan. Known as Papa Dee by his family, he was always willing to play. Whether it was Candyland, Checkers, Chess, Billiards, Basketball, Swimming, or any other game you can imagine, it was Papa and his grandchildren doing the playing.
Perhaps his biggest passion, though, was playing pickleball. Once he discovered the game, there was no stopping him. He helped to organize the Monroe Pickleball Association and at one point held the title of the Ambassador of Pickleball. If he wasn't playing pickleball, he was talking about playing or talking you into playing.
Decator met the love of his life, Betty Flournoy Overby, in 1961 when he was just sixteen years old. They were married on June 30, 1966 in Greensboro, NC and together they raised three children: Decator Corey Overby Jr., Ciray Overholzer, and Carey Michelle Overby. His children were a source of great pride and he loved helping them with a variety of projects over the years.
Decator is survived by his loving family: Betty Overby, wife, Corey Overby, son, Farrah Overby, daughter-in-law, Malea Overby, granddaughter, Nyah Overby, granddaughter, Decator C. Overby III, grandson, Ciray Overholzer, daughter, Mike Overholzer, son-in-law, Zoey Overholzer, granddaughter, Caris Overholzer, granddaughter, Rex Overholzer, grandson, Carey Overby, daughter, Mauricio Munoz-Luna, son-in-law, Andie Overby-Luna, granddaughter, Bella Overby-Luna, granddaughter, Cody Overby-Luna, grandson, Anthony Overby, brother, Loretta Burns, aunt, Darrell Brumfield, uncle, and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He was preceded in death by Vera Brumfield, mother, and Herman Overby, father.
