Carey always got people to volunteer for Turner when they had an annual volunteer day. This particular year we were volunteering with children in a group home. We were told not to buy them anything. Dee disappeared and when he showed up to the bus at the end of the day, his group of kids all had treats. The kids were calling him Dee or Papa Dee. He had a big heart.

Aunt Loretta wanted to share a story about Dee. A few years ago, Loretta was in the hospital for a few days. Dee called to check on her every day. When it was time to check out, he wanted to make sure she’d be cared for once she got home, so he drove up to Virginia and stayed with her for several days. She wanted to share how much that meant to her. They’ve been checking in with each other regularly ever since and loved each other dearly.

Betty, I’ve been praying for you and your family and will continue      . Heartbroken 💔 TL.

Our condolences to the family and friends of this kind man. We met Dee several years ago in Monroe when looking for a place to play pickleball while in town visiting family. He was very hospitable to us and we felt like we made a friend. I know he will be missed by many. God bless you.

My prayers are with your family and love ones.  He encouraged me in Pickleball at the Boys and Girls Club and was willing to play with me when I was learning the game.

Papa Dee had a lot of sayings that the family always enjoyed hearing. For example, when his wife, Betty/Noni, would enter a room, Papa would say “here comes the judge” under his breath and a short time later this would inevitably be followed by “yes, dear.”  If you were teasing him, you’d be told to “suck a lemon.” A dim room would be illuminated by the flip of a switch and the phrase, “let’s shed a little light on the subject.” And lately, flatulence triggered the response, “let ‘er rip, tater chip!”
My heart goes out to all of you. Looking through these photos, you can see how much joy being around his family brought Dee. His eyes are sparkling with great love. That light shines in each of you. I’m holding your entire wonderful, smart, and funny family in my heart, praying for grace and your comfort, and celebrating the man who helped make you all possible. Carey - special love to you my friend.
