Deborah's obituary

Deborah Sue (Round) Welker passed away peacefully at her home in Maineville, Ohio, in the early morning of May 12, 2025, surrounded by her daughters and husband of 60 years.

Known as Debby to those close to her, she was a light in the lives of all around her, a social butterfly with a quick wit and a vibrant past. Her life was filled with love, adventure, and beautiful dogs. Debby is survived by her husband, John Welker, two daughters, two sons-in-law, Cynthia Ward (Daniel) and Kristen Welker-Hood (Marcus), and three grandchildren, Grace Ward (Michael Steel), Kyle Ward, and Liam Hood. She also leaves many family members and close friends who will miss her dearly.

Debby was born on April 24, 1943, in Akron, OH, the only child of the late Charles Cecil Round and Hazel Ruby Round (née Puett). There, she attended The University of Akron for Accounting and became the first woman in the program’s history to graduate with an Accounting degree. Debby went on to achieve a Master’s degree in Hospital Administration from Penn State. Over the course of her work life Debby took her skills to many professions starting as an accountant and went on to be a vice president at a brokerage house. In her semi-retirement, she took her skills to many professions, helping the businesses of her daughter and friends.

She raised her daughters to become strong, accomplished women. In fact, her daughters were the 3rd generation of women working in industry in their family. She explored the world with her husband who was her devoted companion. They lived all over the USA as well as Germany and France. Debby was an active and loving Nana, instilling a passion for cooking, reading, tea parties, schnauzers and poodles, musical theatre, and ABBA in her grandchildren. Debby enjoyed a good party; she regularly went on excursions and lunches with her friends.

A celebration of Debby’s life will be held at John and Debby’s home in Texas on May 24, 2025, at 4 pm. Instead of flowers, please consider making a gift to St. Jude Children’s Hospital in Debby’s memory. Debby has made annual donations for many years, and every donation goes directly towards the fight against childhood cancer, a fight researchers like Debby’s granddaughter carry on daily.
