Deanna's obituary
Deanna W. Ashby passed away peacefully on December 7, 2023, in Paris, TN. She was born on May 12, 1946, in Huntingdon, TN to Wayne and Laverne Ashby, and spent most of her adult life in the Joliet, IL area. Deanna is preceded in death by her parents and one daughter, Sarah Monroe.
Deanna was a dedicated and loving single mother to her two daughters, but her greatest joy in life was found in spending time with her three grandchildren.
Deanna graduated from Joliet Township High School and later pursued a career in chemical manufacturing and maintenance at Lyondell-Bassell in Morris, IL. She was known for her quick wit and quirky sense of humor as well as the profound advice she freely bestowed on those she was close to.
Deanna worshipped with her community at Channahon United Methodist Church, and she stayed busy volunteering her time and efforts. She loved being a part of the annual Turkey Supper and the Cookie Walk. She especially looked forward to the Antique Fair held at church every year. She was a longtime member of Channahon United Methodist Women, where she made many close friends and lasting memories.
Deanna had numerous interests and hobbies. She rarely turned down a good time at the blackjack tables with friends or family and some wine. She enjoyed painting nature scenes in the style of Bob Ross, hand-stitching and piecing quilt tops old or new, and gardening. Deanna loved to crochet and completed many afghans and other pieces over the years. A personal and practical gift she created was a set of crocheted hanger covers which are still in daily use. Deanna looked forward to cooking for friends and family, reading science fiction novels, and refurbishing her latest furniture find. She always had a few projects that she was working on, especially after she retired. Deanna treasured the love and companionship of her various dogs and cats over the years.
Deanna is survived by her sisters JoAnn Ashby, of Paris, TN, and Brenda (Robert) Surinak, of Joliet, IL. She is survived by her daughter Rebecca (Phillip) Taylor of Englewood, FL and precious grandchildren Christian and Savannah Taylor, and Kalen Collins. Deanna is survived by Darcie (Chad Horner) Surinak, Stacy (Ryan) Koerner, Jillian Surinak, Bradley Surinak, and Lindsay (Shane) Fowler. She is survived by great-nieces Brooklyn and Paige Fowler and Maven Koerner.
A celebration of life and scattering of ashes will be held on February 23, 2024, in Englewood, FL to honor Deanna’s memory. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to The Alzheimer’s Association or The Alzheimer’s Research & Prevention Foundation.
