Dean's obituary
Dean was born to John and Elizabeth Zick in Denver, Colorado, a second-generation immigrant from Germany. In his early years, Dean helped with the family run businesses, Zick’s Market and Hotel, in Grand Lake, Colorado and Zick’s Market in Denver. Dean graduated from Denver West High School in 1949 and then attended Denver University and received his accounting degree in 1954. He was drafted into the Army which he dutifully served from January 1955 to December 1956. After his service to our country, he worked at Alexander J. Lindsay and Company and became a licensed Colorado CPA in 1959 (certificate #900). It was during his time at Alexander J. Lindsay that he met and fell in love with Arlene Dawn Manchester while on an audit of her employer, B.K. Sweeney Company. They would be married on November 24, 1962 and raised two daughters and a son.
Dean left Alexander J. Lindsay to start his own practice in 1961 and operated many years as a sole proprietor. He formed Zick and Associates, Inc. in 1971, a firm that continues to be well respected and successful to this day. Dean’s integrity, loyalty, trustworthiness, and passion for his trade earned him a world-class reputation and the utmost respect for those he served. This is evidenced in that many of his clients became close friends.
Dean will be dearly missed by his beloved wife of 56 years, Arlene, his two daughters, Karen (Dave) Tinnes and Shelley Heckendorf, his son, Greg Zick, and his twin brother Don Zick. He is also survived by grandchildren Lindsay (Peter) Goupee, Kendall Tinnes, Tobi Zick, Holly Heckendorf, Trevor Zick, Walker Heckendorf, Tyler Zick, and several great grandchildren. Dean was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Jack, Ray, and Bob, son-in-law James Heckendorf, and granddaughter Jacqueline Tinnes.
Dean had a passion for hard work, family, and vanilla ice cream. An avid football fan, he was a long time season ticket holder for the Denver Broncos. He was also a renowned story teller, telling stories with the animation, passion, and four-letter words like only he could.
