Dean's obituary
In Loving Memory of Dean Harris Woodard -
Dean Harris Woodard, 71, of Marion, VA passed away in the presence of his family on October 28, 2025. Born to William and Maxine Woodard on December 3, 1953, in Richmond, Virginia, Dean lived a life marked by compassion, service, and joy.
A devoted father, Dean is survived by his five children: Jonathan, David, Joseph, Daniel, (and their mother Ann), and Elle Woodard (and her mother Caroline), and 10 grandchildren. He grieved daily over the loss of his other daughter Janie, who died in 2020 at age 29. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Doug. He is also lovingly remembered by his siblings Keith, Barry and Karen, who shared in his laughter, his faith, and his unwavering generosity.
Dean dedicated his life to healing, both physically and lovingly, as an emergency medicine physician in the States and across the globe. He founded several urgent care clinics, beginning in 1991 with Emergicare in Harrisonburg, followed by locations in Waynesboro, Manassas and Staunton (Patient Care Plus), and a rural urgent care in Craigsville, VA. His work took him across the world, serving communities in India, Pakistan, and Haiti. Whether in clinics or churches, Dean’s mission was always the same: to serve with humility and love.
Outside of his professional calling, Dean was a vibrant soul who found joy in singing, pickleball, golf, ping pong, and tennis. He was known for his kind heart and a selfless spirit that lifted everyone around him. He believed deeply in caring for the planet and others, often seen recycling with the same passion he brought to his medical work.
A celebration of life will be held at Ivy Creek United Methodist Church, 674 Woodlands Road, Charlottesville, VA 22901 on November 16th from 1-3 p.m. Please RSVP to dwoodard07@gmail.com. In accordance with his wishes, Dean’s body has been donated for educational purposes through Restore Life USA. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to one of the following: USA for UNHCR, Hope for Haiti (an organization that reflects Dean’s enduring love for the people of Haiti) or Loaves and Fishes Food Bank.
Dean’s legacy lives on in the lives he touched, the family he cherished, and the communities he served. His kindness will be remembered by many.
