Dawn's obituary

Dawn Marie (Real) Hough, born in Council Bluffs, IA, on April 19th, 1949, died April 2nd, 2023, peacefully at home with family by her side. Dawn attended Underwood High School, Underwood, IA, where she met the love of her life, Gary Hough. Gary graduated from Underwood High School in 1964 and Dawn in 1967. She married Gary at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Neola, IA, on May 27th, 1967.

Dawn and Gary wasted no time starting a family. They had four boys between 1968 and 1977: Philip, Kevin, Ian, and Michael. Dawn accomplished many things, starting at the Council Bluffs Hospital, with her sister Jessie Etta, taking care of babies. The young Hough family moved to Red Oak around 1976. One of Dawn’s jobs there was driving a school bus, just like her beloved mother, Ada Real, who drove for the Underwood, IA schools.

A couple of years passed, and Dawn started working in a hospital again, this time at the Montgomery County Memorial Hospital in Red Oak, IA, as a Respiratory Therapist. Dawn completed college classes at home and received her Associates Degree. Later, in 1983, Dawn was named the Director of Cardio Pulmonary and Respiratory Therapy services for Clarinda, IA Hospital, so the family moved once again to Clarinda, IA.

After working for Clarinda Hospital for many years, Dawn went back to school and obtained her Bachelor’s and Master's degrees from Concordia College. She hoped to complete her PhD. until she started having health problems around ten years ago. Dawn also worked in child development, having been employed by the U.S. Department of Education. In her retirement, she spent time traveling with her husband, visiting as many friends and family as possible.

Dawn Hough was preceded in death by her sisters Jessie Lary and Hope McClain; brothers, Kevin Real and Robin Real. Dawn is survived by her husband Gary Hough; sons Philip, Kevin (Leslie), Ian (Keaton) and Michael; grandchildren Tyler (Sarah) Evan, Kathryn, Samuel Hannah, Alex and Derek; great grandchildren Sterling, Skylee, Elysse and Hayden and a host of other family and friends.

Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 pm this Saturday, April 8th, at St. Paul Lutheran Church near Neola, IA. Memorial donations can be made to the American Lung Association. Flowers may be sent to the church at 22163 Sumac Rd, Neola, IA 51559
