2023
I am extremely saddened by Dawn's passing. I was always fascinated by her life story and the stories Max would tell me about his mom — how she lived all around the world, leaving a profound impact wherever she went and sharing so many amazing stories about the places she called home. I had the honor of meeting her when Max and I graduated from Brown University in May 2023, and she was such a captivating person. She is an inspiration for me in how she fearlessly embraced life’s adventures, dedicated herself to lifting others through education, and showed what it means to live with courage, curiosity, and a generous heart. This is a photo Max sent me of him and his mom, Dawn, at a café in Baghdad. He told me he had the best time seeing her there, just before he was coming to visit me in Lebanon.

Dawn was a friend and a colleague in international higher education management. News of her death reached me as I was working with  the NGO, Boky Mamiko, in Madagascar.  Years ago Dawn and I had talked of working together one day in Africa, and I am so happy that she was able to realize her dream at AUN, as she was able to realize so much else in her life and career.  Dawn was smart and savvy, funny and fun, generous to a fault. She loved her son very much.  A pioneer many times in places where a woman leader was a "first", she wore her talents lightly and she will be missed very much.

Dawn and I went to grad school at Dartmouth together, each earning our Ph.D.’s in Psychology in 1993, along with Judy Tedlie Moscowitz and Daniel Lehn. We stayed friends over the years – I even visited her in Iraqi Kurdistan. A story that many may not know is that we had a fellow Ph.D. student, Gen Anderson, who struggled with and ultimately lost a battle to a terrible blood disease. As the disease progressed, Gen spent more and more time in the hospital. Gen’s immigrant family was poor and from far away and could not be there with her for most of her illness. So, Dawn spent countless hours keeping Gen company, bringing her take-out, playing board games with her, and generally lifting her spirits. Complete devotion to her friend. When Dartmouth finally paid for Gen’s parents (after a relentless campaign, led by Dawn) to come for the memorial service, it was Dawn they sought out first to thank and to hug. This foreshadowed Dawn’s journey in life. Wherever she wound up, Afghanistan, Mongolia, Iraq, or Nigeria, there are those indebted to Dawn’s dedication to them. My sincere condolences to her family.
I am saddened by Dr. Dawn Dekle' death. I was a student recruiter when Dawn was the Provost of the American University of Afghanistan ( AUAF). She had a loving heart for Afghanistan and its people, particularly women and marginalized groups. Dr. Dekle was a great force behind the university 's growth and outreach to the community. Her presence and leadership helped so many people get a world class education and pursue their dreams globally. She will be missed and remembered by so many. RIP.
What a great life she lived.  I know she will be missed by many.  Love to her family and friends.
