"I realized we are both very private people. You kept your birthday and illness a secret. I do the same thing." - Dawn (October 2019)
That is Dawn's subtle way of 'protesting' that I kept my birthday a secret in 2019.
You are gone, Dawn, but your memories remain fresh.
I celebrate you posthumously today on your 59th Birthday.

No day goes by that I don’t think about Dawn. In fact, I have spoken about her twice today.
I still can’t believe she is no longer with us. The very short time that I got to know her were my best moments during law school.
I miss her very deeply.

We knew Dawn since she was a faculty member at James Madison University in the 90s, and visited her many times in Singapore. We considered her family. We planned to visit her for a week in September and are so saddened that we will not get to spend that time with her.

I’m so sad to hear of Dawn’s passing. She and I met in high school. We visited while she was at A&M and again when she was living in Virginia with Kent, before she had Max. Last time we spoke was 2020 or 2021. She was in Nigeria, I believe & her husband Denis was in Japan & Max was in the states. She wasn’t able to travel to see either of them at the time. She was an amazing human being doing amazing things for education. She will be sorely missed.-Karen Culp Burleson

Dawn's integrity and incorruptibility earned my lifelong respect and friendship. Her generosity knew no bounds in pursuit of the progress of AUN as its President.
Her bond with me was built on mutual trust and respect, and I'm honored.
Dawn's preparedness for her mortality was a testament to her extraordinary character. She may be gone, but her impact remains with many who are privileged to have known her.
Rest in peace, Dawn!

Dawn joined the Stanford Club's book club last year and quickly made an impression with her friendliness and insightful comments. The book club is meeting tonight and we will raise a toast to Dawn's memory.
I had coffee with Dawn earlier this year, and deeply enjoyed a fascinating sharing about our respective lives. I had hoped we could connect more often.
Deepest condolences to Max and her family.

Our condolences to Dawn's family. Paula and I first met Dawn when we worked with her at the American University of Iraq Sulaimani and have virtually followed her in subsequent work in higher education in Mongolia, Nigeria, Baghdad, and San Diego.
In Dawn's passing, we have lost a friend, and global higher education has lost a dedicated leader.

I was deeply saddened to hear about the passing of Dean Dawn Dekle. I graduated from TJSL before she became President & Dean, but I had the pleasure of meeting her at a networking event. When I shared that I was from Nigeria, her face lit up as she told me about her time as a university president there. We immediately bonded over that connection. Her warmth, brilliance, and joyful spirit were truly unforgettable. She was such a light
My heartfelt condolences to her family, friends, and the entire TJSL community. May her legacy continue to inspire, and may her memory be a blessing.

Dawn was the best friend I never had the chance to meet in person. I knew she had been my predecessor at AUAF, so I reached out to her out of the blue, and from that moment on, she became my mentor and fiercest champion. She generously opened her network to me, always lifting me up and helping me move forward in my career.
Dawn taught me the importance of continuous self-improvement, of holding on to grace in the face of adversity, and of showing resilience while always striving to be the best version of oneself, not for recognition, but in service of others. She was always there for me, unwavering in her support, always ready to listen and guide, never asking for anything in return. Sometimes we even competed for the same jobs, but we always trusted that the best person would prevail. We made a promise to each other that one day we would work together, regardless of who would be President or Provost. It was our goal to make that happen. We would have made a fantastic team.
She helped me see with clarity that things would never be easy for women in our field, even and especially at her level, but she also showed me that every obstacle could be faced and overcome. I will always carry her lessons with me. She was my friend, my guide, and my example of strength and generosity. I will carry her with me for the rest of my career.
