It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Dawn Best, who died on December 9, 2022. Born on August 24, 1961, Dawn's life journey was marked by her caring nature, unwavering support, perceptiveness, and creativity. As we come together to remember and celebrate Dawn's life, we also cherish the beautiful memories and lasting impact she left on those who knew her.

Dawn was survived by her loving and devoted sister, Candis Best, and their parents, Joseph and Catherine Best. Family and friends will gather to honor her memory with a Celebration of her Life and Legacy on May 23, 2023, at 4:00 PM at P.S. 059 211 Throop Avenue, Brooklyn, NY.

Dawn's education journey began at St. Joseph's High School in Brooklyn, NY, where she graduated in 1979. She continued her pursuit of knowledge at St. John's University in Queens, NY, earning a B.A. in Commercial Art in 1983. Passionate about education, Dawn began what would become an esteemed career within District 14 in Brooklyn with the NYC Board of Education in 1983.  She spent her entire career serving the families of that District, first as a Teacher at P.S. 297 and later as the longest serving Principal in the history of P.S. 59 before eventually retiring as Deputy Superintendent in 2020.

Outside of her professional life, Dawn enjoyed a wide range of recreational activities, such as watching movies, listening to music, and writing. Her love for travel led her to discover beautiful vacation spots, with St. Simon's Island in Georgia being one of her favorites. She was an advocate for childhood education and DEI causes, always striving to make a difference in the world. Dawn will be remembered for her creativity,  warmth, and the wisdom she shared with those around her.

Among Dawn's many accomplishments, her most impactful legacy will be inspiring children to dream big and believe that humble beginnings can yield great outcomes. As an educator for over 30 years, Dawn touched the lives of countless students, colleagues, and community members, leaving a lasting impression on each one of them.

As we mourn the loss of Dawn Best, let us also celebrate the incredible life she lived and the lessons she taught us. Her caring spirit, supportive nature, and creative mind will live on in the hearts of those she inspired, forever reminding us of the beautiful person she was.
