David's obituary
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Dr. David Alvin York, who left us on February 26, 2024. David was born on March 28, 1942 in Ennumclaw, WA, and was a man whose generous spirit, kindness, and warmth touched every person who had the privilege of knowing him.
David attended University of Washington where he was student body president, graduating in 1965 with a BA in History. He then attended Princeton Seminary for one year and retuned to Seattle to complete a PhD in psychology in 1974.
He was married to Karen York from 1972 - 1982, and together they had two children, Leif York and Anna De La Cruz (York). In 2003, he married the love of his life, Jackson Carter, and gained two stepsons and eventually three more grandchildren. He is survived by Jackson, both children, and Anna's husband Alejandro De La Cruz, and grandchildren Oscar (10), Magnus (6) and Astrid (4); and by stepson Payton Carter and his wife Aya Allen, and grandchildren Noa and Kima; and stepson Ted Carter and grandaughter Dayna.
David pursued a successful career as a highly respected psychologist, using his empathetic nature and exceptional intellect to help countless people. He saw life as an adventure, not only professionally but also personally. From scaling mountain tops to catching the gusts of the wind on his windsurfer, David lived life to its fullest.
One of David’s remarkable passions was travel, which took him to the farthest corners of the planet. His journey began in Iran, where he lived for a year and had incredible stories of the country's culture and people. This formative experience ignited a lifelong passion that led him to fall in love with studying Spanish and traveling extensively to Latin America later in his life.
It was David's kindness, generosity and joyful nature that marked his legacy. He touched everyone in his life with his warmth and generous spirit, and his absence will be deeply felt. His positive influence reached the communities of Seattle and Whidbey Island, back in the United States, and extended as far as Guadalajara, Mexico.
In the wake of our loss, we find comfort in the memory of David’s vibrant life. His spirit of adventure and boundless kindness will live on in the hearts of all those he touched. Dr. David York will be deeply missed by all those who were fortunate to know him.
