David's obituary

David Machen, beloved husband, father, and friend passed away November 4, 2025.

David V. Machen was born to Kay and Ed Machen on July 19, 1954. Growing up in Whittier, California, David was a true Southern California kid, where he spent his time riding bikes all day until sunset, swimming in the neighbor’s pool, and (what we can all assume as those who knew him well) getting into just a little bit of trouble.

He graduated from Lowell High School just after completing the rank of Eagle Scout in 1971. David went on to Sacramento State University, where he earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Accountancy. With his lifelong pursuit of knowledge (David was a fan of Jeopardy), David would also go on to earn a Master’s Degree in Taxation in 2000.

In 1987, David received his Nevada license as a Certified Public Accountant. As a CPA, David spent 38 years making his mark as a hardworking CPA, financial advisor, and forensic accountant. He was the rare kind who could make tax season almost enjoyable, mostly through his calm wisdom and the occasional well-timed joke. Clients and colleagues alike knew him not just for his sharp mind but for his genuine kindness and integrity.

When he wasn’t crunching numbers, David could be found outdoors, where he was happiest—on his bike, hiking a dusty trail, or planning a run with his daughter, Jennifer. During his time as a young man hiking in California and the Sierra Nevada's, David hiked over 100 peaks.

David loved Reno and showed his dedication to improving the lives of its residents by volunteering for more than 13 years with Habitat for Humanity as a Board Member and lending his financial know-how.

David is survived by his wife of over 42 years, Debbie, daughter Jennifer, son-in-law Adam, and sister Carole. As a lifelong animal lover, David would also want to mention his fuzziest companions, his dog Bandit and cat Willow, who were a source of comfort and joy.

David challenged himself mentally and physically his whole life. His final bike race, which he completed just a few months before his death, was the Race Across the West. The race runs from Oceanside, California, to Durango, Colorado, at over 850 miles. David completed numerous long-distance biking events and runs. Of note was the casual nature with which David took on these challenges. As Edmund Hillary said when asked why he wanted to climb Mount Everest, he replied, ‘Because it’s there. ’

David leaves behind a legacy of compassion, hard work, and good humor. His family and friends will miss his steady presence, his gentle wit, and the way he could fix just about anything with a wrench, a spreadsheet, or a well-timed laugh. David built a life filled with purpose, laughter, and a good dose of fresh air, preferably somewhere with a view, and a steep hill to climb.
