David's obituary

David Thompson, Sr., Philadelphia native, and longtime resident of Montgomery County, PA, departed this world for the pleasures of one without pain, sorrow, fear, hate, prejudice, and injustice. He died in his San Diego, CA home on Sunday, October 20, 2019, with his children and pets by his side. He’s survived by his children, Monique and David Jr.; his friend and former spouse, Sandra; adored nieces and nephews; a lifetime of friends and family; and his cherished cat, Beau, and dog, Millie. His spirit is now reunited with his beloved wife of 30 years, Jan; his parents, Hebrew and Gloria; siblings Donna (Willis), Theodore, and Donnetta; and nephews Tory (Willis) and Jamal (Washington).

David enlisted in the US Army after graduating from Simon Gratz High School in 1964 and served as a supply sergeant in Germany during the Vietnam War. He joined the Philadelphia Police Department in 1967 and spent most of his career in the 14th district. David took great pride in his work as a police officer and recalled stories of his time on the force even long after he retired to Willow Grove with Jan, where they raised their family. He smiled everyday, joked often, and looked to the bright side of challenging situations. He loved fishing, woodworking and crafts, art, the Philadelphia Eagles, and home projects. David loved his children beyond words; he showed them love, resilience, and sacrifice. He talked often of them, and with great pride, to anyone who’d listen.

David widowed in 2008 and, in 2013, moved with his son to San Diego, where he enjoyed going to the beach, birdwatching, movies, and games of chess as often as his health allowed. Though his passing comes with great sadness, there’s tremendous relief in his being released from pain and peace, knowing he’s rejoined in spirit with loved ones who departed this world before him. He viewed his life as blessed and fulfilling.

Family and friends will celebrate his life at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 23, at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Glenside, PA with a memorial service and reception in his honor.
